Access difficulty
-
Hello,
I’m having difficult accessing my wordpress account. I think the problem is that I registered two different accounts with the same email address.
The older site is: andrewmuirblog.com
The newer one is straycaymedia.caBoth sites were registered with the email address (email visible only to moderators and staff)
When I log in to wordpress with this email address, I can see the NEWER site under “My Sites” in the dashboard. But the OLDER site isn’t there.
Can you help with this?
Many thanks,
-AndrewThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Luckily, there’s not a way to create two accounts under the same email address as that would make it nearly impossible to sign in correctly. The username on the account you want seems to be
alertedeye. Can you sign in as that username instead? The login will accept an email or a username. You’ll also be able to recover the account, since it has a paid plan.
-
I know that my username is Alertedeye, but when I try logging in with that, I can’t remember the password. I’ve requested a reset several times, but I don’t get the email (checked junk and spam). That’s why I’ve been trying to log in with my email address instead.
I DO get emails like renewal notices from WordPress, but not the password reset. This is why I was under the impression that I have two accounts on one email. I DO get emails to that address from two different wordpress accounts (andrewmuirblog.com and straycatmedia.ca). Any thoughts?
¯_(ツ)_/¯

http://straycatmedia.ca/ is a Godaddy site and not hosted here at WordPress.com so can have the same email address as one of the sites hosted here. The site you’re looking for must be associated with a different email address.
-
Ahh right – straycatmedia.ca is hosted on GoDaddy’s Managed WordPress – now I understand that’s a different system. Thanks for pointing that out. :) But there’s still a mystery.
To clarify: I’m having no problems accessing straycatmedia.ca. I’m trying to access http://www.andrewmuirblog.com.
Here’s the mystery – I don’t HAVE a different email address. I’ve been using the same email address to access andrewmuirblog.com for 4 years. Just TODAY I got an email from wordpress telling me that it’s time to renew that account. I’m scrolling through my email history and seeing plenty of renewal notices for andrewmuirblog.com. All of this is going to my one and only email account that I’ve had forever. So why doesn’t my password reset go to that address? (I promise, checking all my junk/spam folders).

Let’s add a modlook tag for staff to check your accounts. Please be patient as it is the weekend but I’m sure they’ll be able to sort this out in due course.

Hi Andrew,
To access that site you need to be logged in as
alertedeye. The Gmail address you indicated above is not the email associated with that account – the email on that account has never been changed, so the Gmail address also wasn’t associated with it at some point in the past.If you don’t remember the correct email address for that account, please use our account recovery process at https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/ to regain access.

Hi, this is Andrew, logged in from my OTHER wordpress account.
Thanks for looking into this. I’ve done some digging and unfortunately I’m still at a roadblock. Here’s what it looks like from where I sit:
I actually have 3 active wordpress accounts:
1.
USERNAME: andrewmuir99120917
EMAIL: (email visible only to moderators and staff)
SITE: straycatmedia.ca
PASSWORD: Known, and I can log in2.
USERNAME: andrewmuir
EMAIL: (email visible only to moderators and staff)
SITE: I never made a site for this account – I made it and forgot about it years ago
PASSWORD: Known, and I can log in3.
USERNAME: alertedeye
EMAIL: ????????
SITE: alertedeye.wordpress.com (and andrewmuirblog.com?)
PASSWORD: ????????The only logical conclusion is that “alertedeye” is associated with an email address that I don’t know, or perhaps created and forgot about. But here’s a strange fact: I have a bunch of emails for “alertedeye” in my inbox for the hotmail account listed above – the one associated with the dormant account. Man I’m so confused!
Sorry about this tangled mess. I hope there’s some reason you can find in all of this.
Many thanks,

I would be too!
I can confirm the address is neither of the ones you listed and your presumption that it’s another address is correct.
But maybe the Hotmail notifications could help you figure out the correct address. Are they being auto forwarded? What do the alerts say?

I checked my hotmail account, and the emails come directly from the email address: “support at wordpress dot com”. They’re all comment notifications for the blog Alerted Eye, and there’s about 100 of them. The first came on September 17, 2006 and the last came on February 7, 2012.
I also discovered this curious email received on Dec 4, 2006, a few months after I created the blog. I’ve copy/pasted it below:
Subject: [ The Alerted Eye ] New Admin Email Address
Dear User,
You recently requested to have the administration email address on
your blog changed. If this is correct, please click on the following link to change it:
[redacted]You can safely ignore and delete this email if you do not want to
take this action. This email has been sent to ‘andrew_muir69 <at> hotmail <dot> com’

http://wordpress.com/I’m not sure if this is any kind of clue, but it’s the only evidence I can find that there might be more than one email address connected to this wordpress account – even if it’s a very old one. In any case, isn’t this proof that the username “alertedeye” is (or at least WAS) associated with the hotmail address? Does any of this show up in the system on your end?
Thanks for any help!!

Those admin emails were an older system that WordPress.com no longer uses. It means that the account for alertedeye is under a different email address. The admin email didn’t replace your account email, but was secondary to that. It can’t be used for account recovery.
If you still have a third email, or the one you’d used before changing to the one listed above, that’s going to be the right one. Support emails that are more recent than the 2012 ones would also be a clue.
You’ll also be able to use Account Recovery since there’s a paid upgrade on the account. https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/

Thanks for this info. Unfortunately I can’t use WordPress’ Account Recovery service because I don’t have access to my credit card statements that far back (my credit union uses a different provider now and I don’t get e-statements) – so I don’t have the necessary transaction ID. All other recovery methods require access to the email address, which I don’t have.
I’ve been digging through some forums and there’s a good chance my emails got messed up as a result of the merger between YouTube and Google in 2011/12. Before then, my YouTube account was connected to Hotmail, and my YouTube profile was – you guessed it – Alertedeye. When the switch happened, Google prompted me to create a Google Account under the same name. When I realized this today, I thought “EUREKA! that must be the missing email address”. I took a lucky guess at the password, and got in. And when I checked out the inbox, it was mostly spam as you’d expect – but there WAS some spam addressed to “alertedeye.wordpress.com”. No official emails from WordPress though, and no password reset links anywhere. Weird. I tried using this “alertedeye” gmail address as a WordPress login, but it just went ahead and automatically created another NEW WordPress account – thus adding to the account pollution I’ve inflicted on the internet haha. I must conclude therefore that even THIS email address is not the one associated with my “alertedeye” username on WordPress. Riveting stuff here.
It looks like I’ll have to give up on my blog, which is sad because there’s important personal stuff in there I need to access. My only other idea is that maybe the account is associated with my old university email address, “amuirb at sfu.ca”. This email account was closed by the university around 2011/12. Can you confirm/deny this?
Thanks to everyone who has tried to help with this.
-Andrew -
UPDATE:
I’ve found some evidence that my SFU email account is indeed the one associated with my account. Requested to re-activate my old university email account to confirm.
-
I don’t think that was related; again the address here has not changed.
I do think it’s possible you had email forwarded from one address to your hotmail address for a time, though.
Is there any chance you could call your card company or bank about this year’s charges? Looking at the information you’ve given, that’s likely your best bet.
-
UPDATE:
SUCCESS
Thanks to everyone who helped me untangle this mess. If you’re curious here’s what the problem was:
An old university email address was in fact the right email. It was automatically set-up to forward to a secondary email address after the university closed the account to change to a new system (hence my confusion about which email was correct – thank you for pointing that out). This confusion was compounded by a long series of overlapping/similar usernames and logins built up over 10 years. Long story short, you guys saved the day. Many thanks.
