access html in wordpress

I understand that there is no way to access the underlying html of a wordpress site. What are some methods that can be used to further customize the design of a wordpress site? If I were to create my own theme I assume I would have access to the html I wrote to create it even after it is published, correct?

If you are referring to a wordpress.com blog the answer is “NO”. The only themes we can use are located here > Appearance > Themes. WordPress.com blogs do not have FTP access, and no themes regrardless of who created them can be uploaded into our blogs.

As you state we cannot edit the underlying templates for our themes. We can purchase a CSS editing upgrade but that does not allow access to the underlying HTML or PHP so even with a CSS upgrade and working with the Sandbox 1.6.1 theme we cannot access those files and change functionality, we can only affect appearance.

I am begining to think I am confusing a WordPress site with a wordpress.com blog. I thought at first that there was only one WordPress. I know for a fact that I do have ftp access, I use filezilla and manipulate those file however I want. I know also that I can add or remove php, I have dont this many times. So, am I getting confused somewhere? Do I not have a wordpress.com blog?

If you have FTP access then you have a self hosted wordpress.org install, and as that’s the case, you are posting to the wrong forum. You ought to be posting to this one http://wordpress.org/support

Here are the differences > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Also if you had posted the URL for the blog in question I would have told you in seconds flat that you were in the wrong forum.
