access to admin panel

I am trying to add a plug-in and do not see the option to go to my WordPress Admin Panel (from there to click on Plugins » Add New) – my website is hosted through hostgator. As a newbie, I am not sure even if my site is through wordpress.org or wordpress.com. I have spent hours and am quite frustrated… Please help.
    thanks

  • Howdy,

What is the address of the site you’re wanting to add plugins to? If using WordPress.com, you’re not using your Hostgator account for that site. If the site is on Hostgator, you’re using WordPress.org instead (more on that below).

It is not possible to install plugins on WordPress.com, for security reasons. Plugins can only be installed on self-hosted WordPress blogs. If you are wondering how WordPress.com differs from WordPress.org, this support article explains the distinction:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If you don’t find what you are looking for, just let me know what you’d like to achieve with a plugin and we’ll see what we can do to find a solution.

    Cheers!

It looks like I am on wordpress.com (the domain name is: http://www.doctorzinger.com) – I am interested in access to some of the cool widgets or plug-ins. Two in particular include adding slide shows to the website without sending people away to another site and the other is SEO ability. I am currently hosted with hostgator.com. Should I switch to wordpress.org and if so, how??

  • Hi,

Your site http://www.doctorzinger.com/ is hosted on WordPress.com while that particular domain was purchased elsewhere. The hosting company is where your website actually resides (which server) while the domain name is simply an address.

With a slideshow, have you tried our own slideshow tool? You can add a Gallery to any post or page and set it to the “Slideshow” style. The link includes step-by-step instructions with screenshots.

With SEO, we have added in a number of SEO enhancements directly into WordPress.com. As a first step, you may want to enable Google Webmaster Tools and Bing’s tool to help you see what those search engines are reporting regarding your site. Instructions on how to set that up are found at http://support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

Lastly, if you do decide that you’d like plugins or widgets that we don’t offer, you can either move to Hostgator using our do-it-yourself instructions at http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org or have us do it for you with our Guided Transfer upgrade: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/guided-transfer/

Does that help? If you need anything else, please let me know!
