Access to my beekeeping site – https://whitstable-hernebay-beekeepers.org.uk/

  • Unknown's avatar

We recently had a total hard disk failure at home and I lost the password for the site above, for which I’m the owner/admin. I went through what I thought was a password reset for my usual email address – (email visible only to moderators and staff) – but something isn’t right because it’s still saying I don’t have admin rights! I need to update our events calendar on that site and I’m going in circles right now, trying to get in. Can anyone help, please?

    Thanks

    Amanda

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • The issue is that the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from is not the owner or admin of whitstable-hernebay-beekeepers.org.uk.

So you must have ended up with a second WordPress.com account at some point. You will need to log into the other account in order to access the whitstable-hernebay-beekeepers.org.uk dashboard.

Yes, I realise that, but it’s the only email address I use for WordPress and I can’t see how to switch to the beekeeping site, which is the only one that matters. Can someone point me to WordPress tech support, please? I can’t find a link for them anywhere which is very frustrating.

  • Hey there,

I would be more than happy to assist you in regaining access to your account. If you could please fill out our account recovery form, we’ll definitely get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Since you have a paid subscription under your account, you should be able to fill out the form if you can find the tranaction ID on the bank statement from when you purchased the upgrade.

If you are unable to fill out the form, please contact our Account Recovery Team directly at passwordhelp@wordpress.com

Please visit our support page for more information on recovering your account.

    Thanks!

  • Hi @amandaleeriley, you’re actually talking to tech support right now. You’re posting in the forum for free sites, which is all your amandaleeriley account has.

The other site is in fact listed under a different account with a different email address. We can’t give out the address for privacy reasons. But assuming you have access to that address, you can figure out what it is. Try commenting on one of your posts. In most cases, you’ll get an email notification at the correct address.

If you have lost access to the address (perhaps you set it up especially for this site and forgot about it?) we can help you regain access with proof of payment, like a transaction ID. Do not post it here, but do let us know you if have it, and we’ll reach out via email to get that from you privately.

Thanks, Supernova, that’s helpful. Only problem is I’ve currently got four email addresses and I’ve got comments turned off on the beekeeping site so I can’t track it down that way. The beekeeping site on WordPress is one of the free ones, so far as I’m aware, so I can’t use payments to track anything down. I’ve got the login to the site that hosts the domain name I registered for it and still maintain, but I can’t get in that way either. This is so frustrating – and completely my own fault for not having documented things better. Can you suggest any other ways I can prove that I’m the admin/owner for the beekeeping site and get back in to it?

Many thanks for your time and help.

Btw, I’ve just noticed that my first post in this thread has something added at the bottom that I didn’t put in, to say that the blog I need help with is the Cinque Ports ringing centre one – but that’s not the case! The one I need help to get back to is the beekeeping one I put in the title to this thread. The ringing centre blog must be something I was experimenting with years ago and just forgot about. I will delete it when this is all sorted out.

  • Hi Amanda –

Let’s try this. I will send a note to the email address that you need to use for signing in to the correct WordPress.com account. When you receive that email, use it for sign in, and even reset the password. If you’re not able to reset the password, reply directly to the email letting me know. I’ll update you here once it has been sent.

  • The note has been sent via email. Let me know if you don’t find it.

Nothing has come through yet, Liz.

Is there somewhere other than this public forum where I can send you/the other mods the names of my email addresses? Because I’ve been checking all four of them – and the junk mail folders for each – and if there’s no sign of anything yet then surely there must be something wrong.

I swear I’m never going to leave my desktop without regular external backup ever again!

  • Amanda, the good news is that whitstable-hernebay-beekeepers.org.uk does have a paid upgrade that was renewed late last year.

Are you able to find a transaction ID for it? If so we can reach out via the email address on this account.

If you prefer to share the email addresses, you can go ahead and type them here. Only staff will be able to view them since our forum software redacts email addresses automatically. You would still need to be able to access the affected account, though.

My email addresses currently in use are:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff) (although this gets automatically forwarded to the kentforlife one since I retired)

One I set up several years ago and don’t use (and can’t remember the password for, tbh) was (email visible only to moderators and staff)

I can’t see the login/password reset link that Liz sent on any of these and I don’t have any others.

I’m a bit puzzled about the paid upgrade we’re supposed to have. I do remember renewing the site as a whole but it wasn’t an upgrade I don’t think.

    Thank you for the support.

  • Hi there,

None of the emails provided is the one connected to the account. Have you checked your bank statement for a transaction ID? If you have a search feature, you can search for wpchrg to see if anything pops up. That will be on the bank statement.

    Thanks,

I’m sorry but this is getting ridiculous. I started that beekeeping website, on behalf of our local branch of beekeepers, six or seven years ago. I’ve written and uploaded all the content, I’ve logged in regularly (the last major changes being to update our calendar of events for the current year a couple of months ago), and the email address I’ve given for members of the public in the contacts section on the website is my main email address (as you can see from the unredacted info I posted above). Presumably, the IP address the content was added from will be mine, here.

I’ve had no problem with it until I unfortunately lost my password with our hard disk crash on 9th April and have had nothing but grief since then. I have no idea what email address you have for the account contact but if it’s not one of those I’ve given above then either:
    a) I have an email address I’ve forgotten about for several years and to which WordPress has been sending information. I do not believe this to be the case;
    or
    b) someone has hacked the account, or there’s someone with a similar named account to mine, and the data at your end has become corrupted.

I’m left seemingly with no choice now but to remove the domain name link to this site and start over building a new website somewhere else under our domain name. This is, obviously, not something I want to do but I will have to do it because our local beekeepers need an internet presence.

If tech support can offer nothing but repeated exhortations to look for bank statement details then I have no other option. I have asked another bank I have an old account with to send me a list of any transactions over the last year but as they only deal with paper it will take a few days for those to arrive and I’m not hopeful of finding this charge you mention anyway.

  • Hi Amanda –

Thanks for hanging in there. Recovering an account can be a frustrating process but we have to follow procedures to offer the best security possible for our users. Anyone could write to us and claim ownership over a site, this is why we require proof.

There’s no evidence of any hacking activity that I have found.

When reviewing the bank statements you are looking for the wpchrg on the statement and that is going to be in the last 3-4 months of 2018. Hopefully that helps you narrow the search.

And last thing, you can email

    passwordhelp@wordpress.com

if the transaction ID does not work in the Account Recovery form.

I now have what I think may be the payment entry details. Where should I post the details of it for this all to be re-set? I want to make quite sure that, if I really do have two WordPress accounts, this re-sets the account that owns the beekeeping blog above.

    Thanks

If only you had written down your password somewhere rather than trusting your computer would always remember it then it would be a simple matter to regain access to your site with the correct username whbbeekeepers
If you have found the transaction ID you can contact passwordhelp@wordpress.com
As this issue has been ongoing for almost a month I’ll tag the thread for staff here too.

  • @amandaleeriley, I’m glad you found something. I’ll check to see if you’ve written into the address above; if not I’ll contact you directly.
