Access to my domain name?
-
Hello, I bought a domain name via wordpress.com. However, I did not renew the domain name this year. Now, when I want to purchase it elsewhere, to have as my own to use, the domain name keeps popping up as unavailable.
If I’m no longer paying for it here why is it still unavailable? And how can I ‘free’ the domain name so that I can use it elsewhere?
Thanks in advance.

Domains take a really long time to expire, up to 80 days, and there is not a way to free it up sooner except the previous owner is offered an option to pay an extra $80 fee to get an expired domain back. This is why we do our best to send as many reminders as possible to renew. It’s better to renew at WordPress.com and transfer the domain to a different registrar than to let it expire here with the idea of re-registering it somewhere else separately. We try very hard to err on the side of not letting people lose their domains, because even after the expiration process is complete, when the domain goes back into the public pool it’s possible someone else could buy it before you have a chance to.
Since you did let it expire, your options are to either pay the additional $80 fee to get the domain back or wait out the expiration period of about 80 days from the time it first expired and then try again.
