I am still trawling forum and have found answer to part of question re text-
-You can change the colour of your text from the visual editor toolbar. It’s the third icon on the second row of the editor toolbar. If you don’t see the second row of icons, click on the last icon in the first row to make it appear. Please don’t use the paragraph drop-down to try and change text size. The options there refer to html heading tags and they display differently in every theme.
You can change your text size on a post-by-post basis by editing the html in the text editor. See here for instructions: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/

WordPress.COM hosted blogs and WordPress.ORG installs are not the same. The differences are stated here
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/For WordPress.ORG software installs only we refer to the Codex support docs https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
For WordPress.COM hosted blogs only we refer to the support docs at http://support.wordpress.com
The .org blog also has more on toolbar to allow me to change font size and colour
For WordPress.COM blog like yours at http://cathiedevitt.com/ refer to the last icon #16 on Row 1 of the Visual editor. Clicking it reveals Row 2 icons. http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/kitchensink.png?w=27&h=27

If you have not purchased the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors. If you are into fiddling about with font families, sizes and/or colors on each and every post you make by using the Text editor (HTML editor) then you can change it in the body text in posts and pages. But for changing it in Titles and widgets you need to purchase an upgrade.
These are 3 ways to change fonts on WordPress.com blogs.
(1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the Text ie. HTML editor. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/
(2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2
(3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#custom-fontsIf you do purchase the upgrade then post your threads for help with editing fonts into the CSS Forum https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

NOTE: The post you link to above was published prior to Staff removing the “more colors” icon from the Editor in March 2014. We have to use HTML codes now if we want more colors than those depicted here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#text-color

How can I add button to insert slideshow
You cannot add a button to the editor to do that. You can create a slideshow or a gallery in any post or page.
All support docs are at http://support.wordpress.com
type in slideshows and click the search link
