access to website

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, a year ago as a complete novice I started building a website. I continued the site development and published it under a non wordpress URL. I’m now trying to access and update that non wordpress site. After publishing I was able to edit the site and amend content but now I cannot access it or more likely cannot remember how to access it. The site was a start up site for a business which did not start due to covid lockdowns but I want to update the site ready for a launch in March this year when I hope the vaccines will free things up a bit in the world. Can anyone advise how I can access the site for updates / bring the site into WordPress for updates as I’m missing something quite basic I’m sure.
    Many thanks

To point you in the right direction for help: what is the URL of your site?

The internal site was healthflowhypnosis.wordpress.com which was never developed beyond understanding how to put a page together and used as a sandbox

the external site is http://healthflowhypnotherapy.com which I used to edit in WP but can’t see or remember how to access now

All I can see when I log in to WordPress is the WP one.
    Thanks

  • Hi there,

Your site is not hosted on WordPress.com, so we cannot help with this. The password for that site has no connection to your WordPress.com account, but is stored in your site’s database on your hosting provider’s servers. We don’t have any access there to help you reset it.

You can see the password reset instructions for your version of WordPress at https://wordpress.org/support/article/resetting-your-password/

For more help with this, please ask the WordPress.org community for advice at https://wordpress.org/support/forums, or contact your hosting provider, Hostgator.com, instead.

    ok, thank you.
Given the site was created in WP I thought I would still have access to the content work so I could update it and publish (?) it again. Seems not.
Is there a way to import it into WP so I can update etc?

    Thanks for the information.

As @kokkieh explained to you that’s not possible as we (WordPress.com) are a different company than your hosting provider. You can learn more about the differences here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Is there a way to import it into WP so I can update etc?

You can import it on a WordPress.com of yours by following the guide linked below. However, you’ll need to access that site’s backend and for that, you need to follow @kokkieh’s instructions.

Thanks fstat. I don’t have access to the back end of the site anymore as it was built under WPJelly, which has disappeared into error 404 land as a website taking any admin access with it. Thus I can’t get into the backend anymore.
It is sitting there active but orphaned. I can see the http://site/wp-content/ folders and files is there a way to rebuild a new site in WP using these?

It seems a rebuild is my only way but I’d rather not have to do everything again from scratch.

    Thanks

  • Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with Hostgator.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.
