Accessibility

I’m blind, and can’t seem to use the site since the latest changes. I’ve managed to get to a part that says ‘Editor content’, ‘Editor settings’ etc, but I can’t get into any of them. I’m unable to use a mouse; I just use the keyboard. After nearly 10 years of blogging, this is so disappointing.

  • Hi @childrencount, are you using https://wordpress.com/posts or https://childrencount.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php to manage your posts?

I’m wondering if this is a problem with the editor, or just with the navigation to get there. Let us know; we’ll help you sort this out.

  • Hi there,

From that dashboard URL, you should have access to most of the links that you present, as the editing links should be the same as before. However, there are some things that have indeed changed since Unified Navigation has rolled out, so if you can let me know what exact areas or features you now having trouble accessing, I’d be more than happy to assist you.

    Thanks,

I’m having trouble accessing it all. When I go to the Write button, I get a list that says “Editor Content”, “Editor settings”, etc, but I can’t get into any of them. Neither enter nor spacebar will work. All I want to be able to do is add new posts and edit my old ones in classic editor.

  • It sounds like this might be related to the change in the navigation.
We will be happy to report this to our developers. For that, though, we would need to know some more details about your computer setup and the issue itself.

I understand that you are using a screen-reader to work on your site; is that correct? If so, which software and which browser do you use?

When you’re on your dashboard, are you able to select anything from the menu, or do the menu items seem empty?

I use a screenreader called System Access, which was made by Serotek. I’m on a Windows 7 laptop and I’ve tried with 2 browsers – Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. I can get as far as All Posts, but have problems when I try to add a new one or edit one. When I try, either I find a menu that says “Editor content”, “Editor settings” etc and I can’t select any of them, or the cursor just takes me to the end of the page and I can’t find the menu at all. I wish you had thought about accessibility before making any changes.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that additional information, and this is something we can look into.

I just want to double check some finer details if I may. Does this occur when:

    1. Log into WordPress.com
    2. Click on posts (or pages)
    3. Click Add new and/or when editing a post?

    Or does this happen when:

    1. Log into WordPress.com
    2. Click write.

Lastly, are you able to detail what happens when navigating via: https://childrencount.wordpress.com/wp-admin please?

    Many thanks.

Hi. It happened both on WordPress.com when I went to Posts or Pages, and when I went to the Write link. However, the wp-admin link works like it used to, and the classic editor is there! Can’t thank you enough for this! Please, PLEASE keep this option available, as it’s great to still be able to blog!
