Accessibility for Admins, Editors, Authors, and Contributors.

Hi. My name is Eric. I am visually impaired, and I am trying to create a blog for members of a job club for people who are blind or visually impaired. We use a tool called a “screen reader” that recites the web page to us. WordPress has themes that produce nice clean pages that are very friendly to screen readers. However, their menus and tools for those who will be posting to the blog are very inaccessible. For example, as you can imagine, we don’t use mice. We tab between the controls and links on the page. But WordPress’s editor for posts uses graphic icons to control the look of the text of the post. Now, I can tab to these controls with no problem. But, since they didn’t include “alt” descriptive tags on the icons, the screen reader has nothing to read, so I don’t know what the controls do. Is there a way to make this blog accessible to people with disabilities? Can I create a custom page that I can use to create new posts? Can I request WordPress to add “alt” tags to their icons? Is there a tools for the PC that I can use to create a post that would be more accessible? Thank you for any suggestions.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Probably best to let the staff take a shot at this and maybe move it to the ideas section
I have flagged this for the staff

Hi technomage21, thanks for your feedback!
If you are interested, WordPress is developed by a community (the software is open source), and in fact there’s a group of individuals and developers dedicated to Accessibility. You can follow along on their chats, development, and perhaps even contribute to the discussion and/or be a beta tester by following this site: http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/
That would be the group to talk to about making changes to the post editor — I’m sure they would love to hear your feedback and suggestions. :) You can use the form on this page to join the group: http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/join-us/
For now, you may be interested in trying an offline editor to compose posts on your PC. We have several suggestions for popular editors on this page: Offline Editing
