Accessibility in WordPress.com

I’m researching the best option for a simple blog/website for a small research project with people who have chronic illness disability.

The Personal Plan seems like generally a good option, as we want our own domain name but we don’t have the time/funding to invest too much in the technical side of the website.

Our participants may not have stereotypical accessibility needs, so an accessible theme probably isn’t the answer. For example, they may prefer less colour contrast rather than more, or serif rather than sans serif. Ideally we’d use a plugin with personal options like Accessibility or WP accessibility helper. I’ve used these before via a GoDaddy hosted WordPress.org site.

Is it possible to use accessibility plugins through the WordPress.com Personal Plan?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there
I am sorry to say that plugins are not allowed in content hosted here at WordPress.com due to various security issues. You can read more about plugins here.

https://en.support.wordpress.com/accessibility/ talks abut the various accessibility options including themes available on a site hosted here at WordPress.com.

    Hope that helps

    Hi there,
Even if we upgrade to a paid plan, we cannot upload custom plugins on WordPress.COM. We are limited to some built-in plugins that come with WordPress.COM.

Check the list of built-in plugins for the plugin you might be looking for:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

But, your can request a plugin if you think it’s features are beneficial to the users of WordPress.COM, by posting your plugin idea on the Ideas forum.

As it is written here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/#plugin-requests.

The goal of WordPress.COM is to keep things simple. So that the technical stuffs are handled by WordPress and we focus on creating quality content.

If you wish to have greater control over your site, you can use WordPress.ORG-a self hosted platform/software to create blogs, websites and more, with greater customization possibilities.

Find out the differences between WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you wish to move your blog from WordPress.COM to WordPress.ORG, follow the instructions given here:
    https://move.wordpress.com/

You can ask for help while creating your site using WordPress.ORG on this support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/. Because, this forum only supports the sites hosted on WordPress.COM.

For your theme needs(because you mentioned fonts and colors in your question), you can take a look at the theme page and find the suitable theme that works for you.

    Hope this helps :)

@Otpidusprime ha what you suggest here

This is how I got to post on this forum. The link doesn’t point to requesting a plugin, it sends you to asking a question on this forum.

This is what I want to do though. I want to request that accessibility plugins are included in the standard WordPress.com plugins. When you think about it, it is pretty poor in terms of disability equality that they aren’t already. Shouldn’t this have been one of the first considerations?

I have previously used these plugins through WordPress.org but I think WordPress.com might generally be a better fit for this brand new site. Plus I also think as a matter of equality they should look at offering this to everyone, even if we end up using a WordPress.org site in this instance.

Ah I have now seen there is a relevant link on that page, it’s just that the more prominent link sends you here. I’ll give it a go.

I hyperlinked my answer with the link to the ideas forum but it wasn’t there when i submitted the answer, I guess there was some glitch of some kind. Anyways, here the link to the ideas forum where you can post your plugin ideas: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas
