Accessibility: menu buttons not working with A screen Reader on mobile site
-
Hi,
I’ve almost done creating my website. However, I cannot get the menu buttons on the mobile site to work with my screen readers JAWS on Windows and VoiceOver on iOS safari and the wordpress app. When I get someone sighted to look at them, they work fine, and they are able to click them and access the menus. However, I am not able to do this with my screen reader.
My website is:

Please can you advise as to how I can fix this, as accessibility matters on my blog.
Thank you.

Hi there,
When you say “JAWS on Windows”, are you speaking of a mobile device using the Windows 10 Mobile operating system?
Can you give more details on what exactly isn’t working? Does the screen reader fail to recognise or read the menu? Is it just the navigation aspect itself that fails? I assume you use voice navigation on the touch screen, correct?
I do notice you’re using the Editor theme, which is not tagged as Accessible in our theme showcase, so it could be that the code to make the mobile menu accessible simply does not exist in this theme. I’m happy to report this to our developers if you can give more details on exactly what isn’t working, but this is an older theme, released in 2014, so I cannot promise that the necessary fixes will happen.
As an alternative, you can find our themes that are accessible at https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/accessibility-ready/
