Accessing Blog Content

To read WP blog content, must I have a site?

On one of the WP blog sites, when I try to link to a story listed in the Table of Contents, and click on a story, I’m sent to a WP page that tells me, ‘You don’t have any WP sites yet. Would you like to create one?’, with a ‘Create One’ link. So, it looks like I must create a WP site and develop a domain name, for which I would pay an annual fee (beginning in year two) before I can read any content linked from the Table of Contents.

Is this the case, or is something not working correctly?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi @beschulenberg, it sounds like maybe the blog you’re following to has an incorrect link… does it happen to have a link anywhere else on the page that will let you view the post?

Also, can you copy and paste the link you’re sent to here?

This link appears to be the one to the story/content I may be seeking, and changes if I click on a different story. Yet, it is superseded by a WP page that has this, no matter the story link:

You don’t have any WordPress sites yet.
Would you like to start one?

    Thanks for that!

That link is the backend link for the site on the WordPress.com dashboard and unless you’re a registered user on the site, you won’t be able to access it. Also, note that this site is not hosted here but uses the Jetpack plugin features that allow them to edit their site from the WordPress.com dashboard.

However, you don’t need to be a registered user on the site to read their content. You just need to visit their site at https://jwilliswrites.com/ and you can read the content there by clicking the “latest posts” link.

    I hope that clarifies things!

I have a WP account (under beschulenberg). I would assume that makes me registered.
I tried the link you provided, but with the same resulting ‘backend link for the site’ when trying to access content from the JWillisWrites blog Table of Contents link.

Still not resolved, but I very much appreciate your help and quick response.

  • https://wordpress.com/page/jwilliswrites.com/154 is the page editor, so it’s only accessible to Administrators and Editors on the site.

The public URL for that page is https://jwilliswrites.com/?page_id=154

I suppose it’s possible they just gave you the wrong URL for the page. :)

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

The URL is automatically provided when I click on the link to any of the JWillisWrites srories from his Table of Contents. While the URLs differ for each story, it always takes me to the page that requires me to create a site.

  • Hi there,

You are referring to the links in the TOC on this page, yes?

    https://jwilliswrites.com/?page_id=95

To clarify, that is not a site hosted on WordPress.com but instead the owner of jwilliswrites.com has set up their site on Bluehost. You can confirm this here: https://gwhois.org/jwilliswrites.com+dns

To clear up any confusion, we are not the only provider of WordPress sites, but one of many providers who are not related to one another. We are able to help with sites we host directly but can’t help with sites that are hosted on other providers such as the one you are having trouble with.

Instead what I would recommend is that you reach out to the owner of the site and let them know that the links they added are broken, so they can fix them. This is something they would need to do and not something we can do on their behalf.

I don’t see that the owner of the site has a contact form, but you may wish to leave a comment on this page letting them know about the broken link issue on the TOC so they can investigate: https://jwilliswrites.com/?p=1

Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
