Accessing the different page layouts show in the Twenty-Twelve theme
-
How can I change the page layouts for my Twenty Twelve themed website? Specifically, I’m trying to make my home page look like the sample home page, with my text next to my image (not below.) Similarly, how can I access the different page layouts shown in the theme preview? For example I want other pages to be full width. Thanks!

Hi there!
First, the Twenty Twelve demo page is using a special Front Page template. Add text, images, video, anything you’d like to the upper area, then arrange front-page-only widgets below in one or two columns. To get the look of the demo home page, follow these steps:
1. Set your home page as the “front page” following these instructions
2. Select the Front Page Template for your home page following this guide
3. Add a featured image to your home page
4. Add widgets to the First and Second Front Page Widget AreasThe page templates can be selected in the page editor and following the steps here:

Thank you for the prompt response! I had already set all of that up, with the exception of setting the Template under Page Attributes to the Front Page Template. Unfortunately, changing it still did not fix my problem of the text appearing below my image rather than next to it. Is there a way to fix that? Once I “Add Media,” the image appears but the cursor is blinking down at the right corner of the image, and I can’t seem to find a way to move it to the top of the image so I can type the text next to the image. Any suggestions on how to make that happen? I normally feel pretty tech savy, but for whatever reason, this is totally eluding me. Thanks!

You don’t have anything published in your page titled “Home” – which is what you chose as your Front Page using the front page template. How images are displayed in the site editor are different than how they’re displayed once a page is published. Are you trying to set up a different page as your Front Page rather than the one titled “Home”? If so, please let me know what page that is and I’ll take a look.

I think I’ve finally figured it out. (I haven’t posted anything permanently on my homepage yet because I don’t want the wrong thing to be live.) I found that if you click on the image, and then select the icon in the left corner. It opens the edit image dialog box & I could then select the option that allowed me to position the text around the image. It’s still not perfect, but it’s good enough for now! Thanks for your help.

Glad you were able to figure it out!
If you want, you can temporarily set your site visibility to Private under Settings -> Reading and choosing “I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose” under Site Visibility – then you can publish your posts and pages and make changes without anyone else being able to see it. Then, when you’re ready to go live, you can change it back.
Happy Blogging!
