Hello @kwhomestyling,
Those are some well thought questions. I will try my best to answer them all in full efficiency.
do I pay up front?
All payments are for a full year in advance. Renewals are yearly, but WordPress.com begin trying to process renewals at 11 months, so there’s time to get things fixed if a renewal fails to go through.
If you’re not happy with your purchase WordPress.com offers a full refund for 30 days, but remember they do not provide pro-rated refunds if you cancel after 30 days.
More details in https://en.support.wordpress.com/manage-purchases/and can I change my plan down the track if this isn’t what I want ?
Yes, you can change a plan at any time after the purchase. You can choose to downgrade or upgrade the plans from the existing ones. If you purchase a plan and then decide to upgrade later on, you would only pay the difference between the two plans — this will be reflected in your cart if you add a higher plan after upgrading.
also if I choose a domain later can I change the word press one it seems you’re giving me ?
You can start by choosing a free address and add a custom domain later on. If you need to upgrade plans in order to access certain features, the domain credit included in the plan can be left unused until a later date.
Please note: A domain is included for the first year (as part of the plan cost) but it will renew at the regular price after that.
I hope I have addressed all your questions efficiently. Please feel free to write back if you need more clarifications. Happy to help!
