Account activation … over and over again

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello fine WordPress engineers! For some reason, I’m being asked to activate my WordPress account over and over again. Despite ‘activating’ 4+ times now (and BTW, the account has been live for several years), I’m still receiving the error message on my dashboard to activate. Can you help? [e-mail address redacted]

    Thanks kindly!

  • Hi Julie,

Were you trying to update your e-mail address or anything to that effect when this started? I’d like to understand better what may have triggered this fun cycle of activation!

Hello kraftbj — No, no change of email. Buuuut…. I did change the email in my Gravatar. I think it’s related, and somehow triggered a bug in my account. ???

  • Hi Juls,

That is a possibility and something we haven’t seen before. To help me investigate further and make sure we’re on the same page, can you answer a couple of questions for me?

    1. Step-by-step, how did you change your e-mail address in Gravatar? If this is a bug in our system, this would greatly, greatly assist in finding where it occurred.
    2. What is your end-goal in the recent change? Were you attempting to have both e-mail addresses (your WordPress.com and the new one) associated with Gravatar?

Thank you for your patience and willingness to help us track down this issue. It appears to me that you shouldn’t get an activation reminder again, but if you do, could you kindly make a screenshot of it and upload it to your blog’s Media Library?

    Thanks again!

Hi kraftbj — You’ve been really responsive, and I appreciate all your support. We have several blogs attached to our email, and in Gravatar, I added a separate email address I use for just the julsjuls blog. When I make it primary, I think that’s what throws it off — I think WordPress thinks my email has changed, so it asks me to (re)activate. Does that make sense?

If that is, in fact the case, how can I have different Gravatar account associated with my different blogs (even though they are all registered under a single email address)?

  • Hi Juls,

Hope you had a good weekend. That does make sense, though I can’t reproduce the situation.

I’m resetting your Gravatar account, which should send you an e-mail to the e-mail you originally gave to me that you wanted added, to add that address only to Gravatar.

By design, one Gravatar/WordPress.com account can have multiple email addresses attached, so changing, per se, isn’t needed.

When using multiple Gravatar images, you have a couple of options: When commenting, if an option, you can simply insert the different e-mail addresses into the comment form to choose which address’s Gravatar to you.

As an alternative, you can create a second WordPress.com account for each different blog that you wish to use a separate Gravatar for. If you’d like to go this route and would like me to create the user name to match your blog’s name, please let me know and we can continue the conversation privately on how to do that. (ex: Your username now is example with sites of example.wordpress.com, example1.wordpress.com, etc. The system won’t allow a new user of example1 so there is no conflict with your second site, but we can generate the account to match for you).

Thanks for your patience and willingness to help debug this issue!
