Account closure…does it release a previous username after the 30 day period?

In the confusion of creating and connecting a Gravatar to my wordpress.ORG site, I changed the username of my wordpress.COM account (instead of the email…).

I would like the original username from my .COM account associated with my .ORG account but I learned I can’t revert back to an old username.

If I close the .COM account, wait the mandatory 30 days, is the original username ‘released,’ so I can snag it again? Or once it’s changed, I’m outta luck forever? Thanks!

  • Usernames on WordPress.com are never able to be reused, and won’t become available even if the account is closed. However, that username is only used here, and won’t be seen on your WordPress.org site at all. That site uses its own username system.

All you’ll need to do is change the email here to match, or login to gravatar.com and add another email for the admin account on your self hosted site.

While you can’t get the username back, you can change the display name here. However, that only affects the name shown on sites hosted here. You’ll edit your account on your site to change the name shown there.

    Hope that helps!
