Account Deletion

I have an account I would like to delete. I have a new hosting provider and they offer the option to use WordPress on my website. I installed WordPress in my website on the new hosting provider. I want to delete my old account where I had the free plan. But I don’t know if, when I delete the account, it will delete my new account. I just want to delete the old account and leave the new account intact.

    Hello there,

Since you are using a new hosting provider, then you are not using the WordPress.com platform but you are using the open-source WordPress.org software.

Deleting your account on one wont affect the other, they are separate entities. So you can go ahead and delete your account here if you wish:
    https://wordpress.com/support/close-account/

Note that all sites and contents linked with this account (i.e your website on the free plan) will be deleted and the content lost. Please also note that if you use any other WordPress.com products (such as a paid WooCommerce or Jetpack account) you will need to keep your WordPress.com account.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the reply!

When I go to my WordPress dashboard, it shows me an option to switch site. I click it and it shows two sites, my free one (the old one on WordPress) and the new one I created with my new hosting provider. I click on the new one, and it appears empty, but the settings are the same as the ones I configured with my hosting provider.

    Is that normal?

    Hello again,

No, to my knowledge, that is not. Are you perhaps using the Jetpack plugin and have the new site linked?

Can you please share the URL of the site from your new hosting provider and the URL that appears when you open your new site from WordPress.com dashboard?

Ill flag this post so that a staff member sees it and can perhaps offer a clearer explanation.

I am using the Jetpack plugin.

    Hello there again,

If you’re using Jetpack then you will need to have a WordPress.com account:

    Hope this helps!

I removed the Jetpack plugin from the new site on my hosting provider and it disappeared from my sites in WordPress.com.

Now I can delete my account safely, right? After that I can install and setup a new account for Jetpack.

    Hello there,

I cant tell you for sure – if you have a paid Jetpack subscription then I do not know if you can use it after you delete the account.

You can contact their support forums for a better answer:

    I took the free Jetpack.

So, I think I can delete my WordPress account.

@johnscaban – That’s correct. I don’t show any paid upgrades under your account.

To close your WordPress.com account, you need to go through the account closure process on your own. This is not something we can do for you.

You can follow the steps here:

    Close Your Account

Note: This not only shuts down your username, it deletes all the sites associated with your WordPress.com account and all their contents. After a few weeks, this data will be entirely purged from WordPress.com’s servers and the process cannot be reversed. Therefore, please be certain you want to cancel your entire WordPress.com presence before proceeding.

    I hope that helps!
