Account Inquiry

    Hi,

I would like to use WordPress engine to build a website for my new business as I have read great reviews.
However, I am not sure if it fits my business model therefore I wanted to evaluate and try the free package which is advertised as an option on your website.
Unfortunately, after 6 steps of initial setup I am still forced to choose and pay for a package.

Please advise how I can gain access to the free package and evaluate WordPress engine including all the addons available to check suitability for my business module?

    Regards,
    Linda

  • Hi Linda,

On the sixth step select the Start with a free site option at the top.

If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply but I do not have that option. Not sure what i am doing wrong in the other 5 steps but on 1st step I select Business, cause that suits my business.

Do you know what I can do to get that option above the packages or below ‘Pick a plan that’s right for you’?

    Linda

  • On the Give your site an address step, did you enter a custom domain? If you did, you won’t see the free plan option, as a domain requires your site to be on a paid plan.

On the domains step, search for only a key word, not a full domain, and then look for a *.wordpress.com address on the list. If you start with that one, you should see the free plan option.

on 1st step I select Business, cause that suits my business.

You can also try selecting a different options there (though not eCommerce). All that does is affect the default theme and starter content your site is created with, but it won’t have an effect on how your site actually works, so you can still make a business website even if you don’t select the Business option in the first step.

What does a custom domain mean? I bought my domain from godaddy.com earlier today, should I transfer to wordpress and they will then allow me?

  • Hi –

On WordPress.com our free site addresses look like these examples:

    – mylife.home.blog
    – mylife.wordpress.com

A custom domain, is one that ends with .com, .org, .co.uk , etc… See here:

    Domain Pricing and Available TLDs

So, if you already have a custom domain that you bought from GoDaddy you will connect it to WordPress.com through domain mapping. It’s not old enough for a transfer (has to be 60 days old, you can do that later on if you wish). These are the steps for setting up domain mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

The first thing you need to do is choose which plan suits your needs. It’s not possible to use domain mapping on a free plan. An upgrade is required. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

After you buy that plan and it is added to your account the domain from GoDaddy can get connected. Just click on My Sites – Manage – Domains – Add New. Then tell GoDaddy to update your name servers per the instructions in that mapping guide I listed above.

Write back with more questions. I hope this helps.
