Account Recovery

I am stuck in an infinite loop with the Account Recovery and need someone to help me out because I’m really ticked at the idiocy of this system.

I had initially created an account at wordpress.com because I wanted WordPress on my site, and I didn’t realize that wordpress.com was a website builder and not the downloadable WordPress installation that’s found at wordpress.org. After I realized this I closed my wordpress.com account and went to wordpress.org to get the WordPress installation I had been looking for.

Today I attempted to create an account on Gravatar and it said that my email address already exists. So I tried to log in, and it’s saying the account is closed because Gravatar and wordpress.com are joined together (which I did not know when I closed the account).

I attempted to use the Account Recovery form and filled out all of my details. I received this message:

You should be able to recover your account simply by filling out the lost password form with the email address you’ve provided. Please check your spam folder for the reset email.

If you still can’t log in after another reset attempt and checking your spam folder, please resubmit the form below and we’ll try to lend a hand.

Thinking to myself, “that’s stupid that a simple password reset will recover a closed account,” I went to the password reset form. When entering my email address and pressing Get New Password I get this message:

    Account Deleted!

Maybe you have renamed your account.

If you believe your account is deleted in error try our account recovery form and we’ll do our best to get you running again.

So I went to the Account Recovery form and re-submitted the form as the first message I got said, “If you still can’t log in after another reset attempt and checking your spam folder, please resubmit the form below and we’ll try to lend a hand.” After re-submitting the form I received this message:

“Sorry but the website you gave does not exist on WordPress.com. Is it a self-hosted WordPress.org website?”

I can’t submit the form to recover my account. So how in the [expletive] do I go about either purging my closed email address ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) or recovering it so that I can use Gravatar? This is really freaking ridiculous. If an account is closed there should be an option to either purge it or recover it without going through this many hoops. I shouldn’t have to create a new throw-away account (the one I’m using now) just to contact someone about my other account. The contact system is definitely screwed up.

Since it wouldn’t let me post my email, a Staff member should still be able to look it up by the username which is ifireflyl (the same as the username I’m using for this thread, but without the “2” on the end).

Email addresses become free to use here once more 30 days after an account has been deleted.
Alternatively, when you closed your account you should have received a confirmation email. You could reply to that asking for the account to be restored.

That’s exactly what I needed. Thanks for your response!
