Account recovery
-
Several months ago, I was helping a friend develop a WP site and I’ve lost where I kept his login details. At the moment we both have no access to the site. We’ve tried the Account Recovery Form but we can’t send send it without a Transaction ID or Activation Key. He does have regular emails from his hosting provider sent to his email address, listing the email site url and stating its a WordPress installation. Can he use forward these from the email address as Proof of Ownership?
Thanks.

Hi there,
Can you please let me know the site’s address so I can point you in the right direction of getting support?
Please note that these forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only. If the site is using the open-source WordPress software you need to contact your hosting provider.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back. Really appreciate it. The site in question is not hosted by WordPress.com so I’m guessing this is for the hosting provider then. I had assumed that WP would be the one since we can get into the hosting provider’s admin panel but not into the WP one. I/we’ll chase up with the provider.
Again, thanks very much.

To clear up any further confusion, there is WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and they are two different entities.
We, WordPress.com, are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites, whereas WordPress.org is stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.
You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:

I hope that helps :)
If you lost your password to a site hosted elsewhere, you can have a look at the Codex article “Resetting Your Password” to learn how to reset your password:
