account recovery without proof of ownership
-
I need help with recovering an account that I believe is linked to a defunct e-mail address. As a result I cannot access any login link or reset password link. Please could a staff member contact me to help? My current e-mail address is (email visible only to moderators and staff), thanks.

Hi there,
Can you please provide the username, or the address of a site in the account you’re trying to access, so we can know what account you’re speaking of?

Hi there,
If the password reset options doesn’t work, in order to regain access to a WordPress.com account, we’ll need one of the following things:
* A transaction ID for any upgrades purchased for the account
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transaction-id/
* The WordPress.com account activation link, which we sent to your email address when you first registered with us.
You can read more about it in our Account Recovery guide:

@fstat thanks, but that’s just it – it’s a free account with no upgrades and I don’t have the activation link any more because I suspect the e-mail account with which I registered is defunct. The account recovery form doesn’t help me, unfortunately. I posted new content to one of my sites without a problem recently (my browser admitted me to the dashboard without requiring the password) but I don’t understand why I am unable to access the dashboard now. I hope someone can help engineer some happiness … thanks.

With out the proof of ownership mentioned in the Account Recovery form we aren’t going to be able to grant access to the account. Those are the only acceptable terms for recovering an account on WordPress.com.
Have you contacted the previous email provider to see if you can get temporary access to the account? Or if they can help you track down the activation link?
The only thing that we can share about the account is the username, as that is public information. You need to sign in to the kscrivener account.

Yes, thanks, I knew my username and have sent a ticket to what I think is the previous email provider and am waiting for a reply. If I am right, however, that email address hasn’t been in use in more than 8 years, and I am not optimistic that the account still exists.
I really sympathise with WordPress’ terms and appreciate the fact that you take security seriously. But I can see from the forum threads that this is a frustratingly common problem. Please would you consider introducing some other ways for people in my situation to prove our identity and recover our accounts? Another of my sites, modesties.wordpress.com (please redact) is password protected and therefore not visible to the public. I could prove my ownership from the fact that I know the content because I posted it – would you consider that acceptable?

Hi

I understand your frustration but for security reasons, we can only accept information listed on the Account Recovery form as proof of ownership . If your email provider is able to help you access that account, you can reply back to us here.

This issue is resolved, thank God! My previous email account was indeed defunct and deleted, but the service provider was able to issue me free trial access to an account with the same signup. I had a login link sent there, successfully recovered all my blogs and updated the WordPress.com e-mail address. Posting this in hope that others might find it helpful. Thanks!

My name is Sue Betanzos. I am an artist and new office support for Desert Sky Community School in Tucson, AZ.
The school website is: DesertSkyCommunitySchool.org
I was hired by Desert Sky Community School as office support a month ago. My duties are to update the newsletter and this/their website.
Although I have little experience with WordPress, it was easy at first. The password for the site worked. Now, this same password does not. I have tried to reset it with their Google account, but I am directed to a WordPress page where the information is correct, but it claims I have NO SITE created.
The school account setting info is there, but I can’t get to the actual site to update the pages. It says there is NO SITE .
I did actually get into the website with the original password last week after 4 – 5 attempts where it said it was the wrong password and was able to update the home page. I don’t know how or why it did.
School starts this Thursday Aug. 9 and I have to update the pages and add a tab for new school lunch program! Help!!
Our director has forwarded all emails to the new G-Suite account she just got for the school. The director claims no other person has had access to this WordPress website or account.
I don’t have any other proof of ownership information, I am a new employee. The Parent who created the school website may have lost or not documented the account information.

Your site, desertskycommunityschool.org is hosted by iPage
See https://www.whoishostingthis.com/?q=desertskycommunityschool.orgThere are 2 main types of WordPress sites – those hosted here at WordPress.com and those hosted elsewhere and using the WordPress.org version of the WordPress software. Your site appears to be the latter. For your issues, I sugggst you first contact iPage, your hosting provider. When you seek forum help for your site, use the WordPress.ORG forums.

Thanks so very much!
I would never have known this since I’ve only been at this job a couple of months. I don’t know why the password suddenly doesn’t work.
But I will screen capture this and send it to the school director. Meanwhile I’ll do my best to solve this.
Again, sincere thanks. I’ll let you and the community know what happens since this seems to be a common issue. Maybe it will help another in similar circumstances.
