  Please could you clarify my commitment to WP if I start an e-commerce site on WP and then host it on 1& 1 (UK) where I am entitled to a free site on my current package with them. I m not sure whether I will land up paying in 2 places if I create a site on WP and then host it on 1&1 UK.

  They are two completely different places. You either have a site hosted here at WordPress.com (with a Business or eCommerce plan) or you have a site hosted at 1 & 1 where you ask them about setting up a site using the WordPress.org software.
