Account Terms and Conditions – Refund

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello I would like to try and create a website using WordPress. The FREE option is only a blog and to get to do anything useful I would need to upgrade to the $8.25 plan which is billed at $99. If I upgrade to this plan and then decide that I am not happy with this product and request to terminate my membership do I receive a refund of the unused months without question?

I ask, because at times it is a hassle to deal with some internet-based companies. They are quite willing to sign you up and take your money, but once you decide that you would like to discontinue, there’s a fair amount of grief involved in getting the unused months refunded.

I would like your assurance that if I advise you within the next few days that I am unhappy with the product the subsequent 11 months will be refunded unconditionally and I will only be billed for the first month?

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

The FREE option is only a blog and to get to do anything useful I would need to upgrade to the $8.25 plan which is billed at $99.

What do you define as “anything useful”? On a free site you get 3GB storage space, unlimited bandwith, and you can use any theme we have available. You can create posts, pages, portfolio projects and testimonials, embed contact forms, video, audio and documents from a variety of sources, and have access to all our widgets. Your site will also have the exact same SEO and stats as any paid site on WordPress.com. In short, you can have a fully functional site on the free plan.

The paid plans only add extra feature on top of this. This includes the ability to connect your own domain, customise your site with custom CSS, prevent ads from appearing on your site, and in the case of the Business Plan you have a bit more control over your SEO settings, though having the plan does not affect your search engine ranking in any way.

If there’s something specific you want to do that I haven’t covered here, let me know and I can tell you if you need a paid or a free site to do it.

If I upgrade to this plan and then decide that I am not happy with this product and request to terminate my membership do I receive a refund of the unused months without question?

Upgrades on WordPress.com are purchased for a year at a time. We have a 30-day refund period on all upgrades except custom domains which can only be refunded for 48 hours, but we don’t offer pro-rated refunds if you cancel after 30 days. If you cancel within the refund period the full payment is refunded (minus the cost of the domain if you also registered a custom domain).

I suggest you start with a free site. That will show you if our platform can do what you want. There really is very little you can’t do on the free plan – I had my site on the free plan for over 3 years and never ran into anything I couldn’t do. I only upgraded to Premium when I started working for WordPress.com :)

Many thanks for your reply. I must have missed something in the setup. Let me go back and work with the plan that I have got.
If it’s alright, I might come back to you if I have any further questions.

Thanks for clarifying the T&C refund policy. I appreciate that.

  • You’re very welcome.

We have a complete tutorial here:

Everything covered there should be possible on a free site, but let me know if you’re looking for anything specific and cannot find it.
