  I selected the wrong type of account and would like to try the free option for now. How can I indicate that this is the selection I would like to make?
  Also, am I allowed to upgrade my account later?

  You can access https://wordpress.com/plans and change your plan. And yes, you can always purchase an upgrade plan later.

  You might need to ask for a refund if you have already paid. Do that by following the instructions at https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/
