I want to verify clarensnews.wordpress.com. I am not succeeding because another site clarensnews.com is preventing this. We have difficulty accessing clarensnews.com and would therefore prefer to use clarensnews.wordpress.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there, your site is currently visible here:

    Clarens Information

It looks like the domain clarensnews.com is owned by someone else, so I’ve removed the domain mapping of clarensnews.com from your site.

You have a free domain included in your Value Bundle which can be added at no extra charge under Store > Domains, but you need to make sure that the domain is available, and doesn’t already belong to someone else.

If you need further help, just let me know.

Thank you Kathy for coming back to me.
I still appear to have a problem when I try to verify the clarensnews@ wordpress site: I keep on getting the message that I am not authorised by clarensnews.com. I think we need to get this problem sorted out before we think of getting another domain.

  • Hi there – could you clarify what you mean by “trying to verify” the site so I can investigate? What are you trying to exactly?

Are you trying to verify the site with Google Webmaster Tools?

  • Unknown's avatar

We now own Clarensnews.com and would like to move clarensnews.wordpress.com to this domain. We have tried to do this but do not really understand dns records etc. (which I think we need in order to get Clarensnews.com working.) Once we have the site working I think we need to verify the site with Google Webmaster tools – so that we can be sure that Google can find it, and that anyone looking for information on Clarens ends up at our site. (Crawling and indexing???) Your help would be much appreciated. (At the moment we are just getting error messages when we try to access the site.)

  • Hi there,

You’ll need to point the DNS server to ours for this to work, as indicated in the notice at the top of https://clarensnews.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains&action=dnsedit&domain=clarensnews.com

Currently, the DNS servers are pointing to Google site builder instead of your WordPress site.

You can find detailed instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain
With some details on the most popular registrar here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers

We are going round in circles. I have tried to follow the instructions and achieve nothing: it seems I just don’t understand all of this.
Is it at all possible that you can do this (point the DNS server to wordpress.) I am also concerned that we should still get email addressed to (email visible only to moderators and staff).
I promise I have tried very very hard to get to grips with this. I am beginning to think that I’m just don’t have the intellectual capability required.

the email we need to keep is (email visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, we cannot update your nameservers for you – they are not available to us.

Here is the information to change your nameservers:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers

Now I know it seems overwhelming, so let’s go through the steps. First, you’ll want to get your DNS information from google or whoever holds the email address. Here’s a bit more info on why:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/custom-dns/

Now, you’ll want to go to your domain registrar, and log in to your admin page to change the nameservers. Your registration is private, so I don’t know who your registrar is.

The first link above will help you if your registrar is one of those listed – you can quickly see the specific instructions.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll see a place to edit your nameservers. You want to change them to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, NS3.WORDPRESS.COM.

Then your domain should be all set! A final step is to go to your Dashboard > Store > Domains and set the domain as your primary domain.

Allow 72 hours for the change to take place (although it’ll probably be a lot shorter).

Your next step is to update the email. The link for Custom DNS can help you there.

Try following these steps, and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for your clear instructions – which I have followed and hopefully we are now on the right track. I have, however, not been able to update the email. The link for Custom DNS has not been helpful (because I do not know how to access the DNS records) and we are not receiving any mail addressed to (email visible only to moderators and staff).
Please could you take me through the next steps.

The saga continues. We have reset to our enom default nameserver settings in an effort to get the email working. We are still not getting all the email. Is there any possible way we can keep the email working while we change the nameservers. This is playing havoc with our newsletter.

  • Unknown's avatar

And it goes on. When we try to google Clarens News the page cannot be found. There is obviously something wrong somewhere. Please advise. Would it help if we sent you the passwords etc for clarensnews at enom? As you can imagine we are becoming very disheartened, and are now under considerable pressure from our supporters who use this newsletter to promote their businesses.

And it goes on. When we google Clarens News the website cannot be found. (We’ve reset the nameservers per your instructions.) We are getting desperate and are also under considerable pressure from our supporters who rely on this newsletter to promote their businesses.
Clarensnews.com was hosted with enom. (The password is tattoo2012.) Please, please, please help.

  • Hi there,

It takes some time for the change to propagate across the web – but now clarensnews.com is correctly associated with your WordPress.com blog!

Here are the specific steps for setting up your email with your provider:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/#other-email-providers

Please note: it can take up to 72 hours for the change to take effect (usually it will take less time, but we counsel this amount of time as the max). If you experience an outage, it should resolve quickly. Before you begin, you will need to ask your current email provider for you MX records and CNAME records. You will be cutting and pasting those on the screen you’ll pull up using the instructions.

Once you have those records, I can help you on with the next step, if you feel you need it.

    Hi,
The link in your email is no help at all – it’s just a page of problems that other members are also having with their emails. The email address: (email visible only to moderators and staff) was working until the 6th December, but is now no longer working. I’ve now visited hundreds of help pages, and tried to follow instructions – and may even have now deleted the DNS records in the process.
So – yes – I need help with the next step. The email was set up through Google apps – but according to them I need to get the MX records from my domain host. I thought that wordpress was my domain host. This is all very confusing.
Please send me explicit instructions on what I need to do next.
    With best wishes,
    Toni

  • Hi there,

Domains and email are tricky, because it takes awhile for them to take effect.

So I went into your Dashboard > Store > Domains > edit DNS, and I added the Google Apps DNS records. Your email should start functioning within 72 hours.

The caveat is that you’ll need to have verified with Google Apps that you own the domain (and I assume you would have completed this step when you created the email account previously). But if you haven’t, that is one thing you will have to do on your end to ensure that the email works.

If you already signed up but skipped the option to verify, sign in to your Google Apps administrator control panel and click Confirm that you own your domain or Activate Google Apps at the top of your Dashboard. (Your control panel is available at https://www.google.com/a/your_domain.com—where you must replace your_domain.com with your actual domain name.) Then follow the instructions that appear.
    http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=60216

So you should be able to just wait for the propagation to occur and you will have working email. Everything looks right on our end, at any rate!

Just let me know if your email continues to not function.

    Cheers!

  • Hi Toni,

I just went back to the team and one of the other Happiness Engineers was able to provide more robust instructions for making sure your Google Apps account verifies the domain:

It’s possible you will still need to click the “Verify” button in your Google dashboard before they recognize that the record is there.

    Here’s how to do it:

    VERIFY YOUR DOMAIN

    1. Sign in to your Google Apps dashboard
    2. Click “Confirm that you own the domain”
    3. Click “Continue” in the pop-up box
    4. Click the dropdown menu to “Select your domain registrar”
    5. Select “Other” from the bottom of the list
    6. Copy the code that begins with google-site-verification
    7. Keep the Google dashboard open, but go to your WordPress.com site dashboard in another browser window or tab
    8. Go to Store -> Domains -> Edit DNS
    9. In the blank under the other MX records, enter TXT followed by the code copied in step 6. It should look like this example (but with your own code after the equal sign):

    TXT google-site-verification=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    10. Click the Save DNS Records button
    11. Wait a few minutes, then return to the Google dashboard
    12. Click the Verify button at the bottom of the screen
    13. At the Congratulations page, click Continue
    14. Go back to Store -> Domains -> Edit DNS in your WordPress.com dashboard
    15. Paste in the following standard Google mail records (below the TXT record that I saved earlier):

    MX 5 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    MX 5 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    MX 1 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    MX 10 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
    MX 10 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
    TXT v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all

    16. Click the Save DNS Records button

That’s it! It may be a few minutes or hours before your email begins working.
