account was set up, but can't create a site

I set up a new account called ‘patrioptics’. When I tried to create my new site, it failed when I selected the free domain name patrioptics.wordpress.com. It came back with an error message:
An active access token must be used create a new Site for the User.

When I tried again, it only offered me patriopticsblog.wordpress.com, as if the domain I had previously selected was now taken and no longer available. OK, so I tried using that as my domain, and got the same “active access token” error.

Now I can login to my account and see the Reader page, but I can’t enter any profile info (the save button stays greyed out, even when all the data is entered), I can’t save sites to ‘follow’, and of course can’t create a site.

When I directly enter the URL
    https://en.wordpress.com/?subdomain=patrioptics
it goes to my ‘Reader’ page.

When I directly enter the URL
    patrioptics.wordpress.com
    I get the error page:
    patrioptics.wordpress.com doesn’t exist
Do you want to register patrioptics.wordpress.com?

When I directly enter the URL
    patriopticsblog.wordpress.com
    I get the error page:
    patriopticsblog.wordpress.com doesn’t exist
Do you want to register patriopticsblog.wordpress.com?

I need this blog to be anonymous, so I have done this all using the Tor Browser. My guess is that this may have had something to do with the problem. There are some discussions of this on the forums, but they are inconclusive.

If anyone can disentangle this and help me get my patrioptics.wordpress.com site up and running, I would be most appreciative!

Thanks so much for your answer. If I understand WordPress instructions correctly, when I try to create a WordPress free blog, it creates a subdomain of wordpress.com, so there’s no need for third party cookies. My problem is not that I created a third party domain and can’t reach it, it is that I tried to create a wordpress subdomain that I’m now told (a) doesn’t exist and (b) apparently does exist, because the name I chose the first time (patrioptics.wordpress.com) is no longer offered as a choice, only patriopticsblog.wordpress.com is offered. But even that can’t be selected because I get the “active token must be used” error, even after put in the cookie exceptions described in the file you cited.

Is there any way I can get a wordpress technical person to tell me what’s wrong and give me step by step instructions to get my blog up and running … or at least undo whatever I did wrong to begin with, so I can start over?

I repeat what I posted above because it is correct.

  • Good Morning –

I see that there was a new post added to https://patrioptics.wordpress.com/ yesterday.

patrioptics.wordpress.com is registered to this account.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Yes, after playing with the cookie preferences on my browser, I finally got it to work. Thanks to @timethief for the help. OK to close this topic.

  • Fantastic, I’m glad to hear that you were able to get this working. Best wishes and take care :)
