Activating a website?

I currently have a website with Volusion. I would like to switch to WordPress. I have never set up a website before but have been watching some tutorials on Youtube. Before I get started. It looks like the minute I download WordPress, the website is active. Is that case?? I want to set it up, make sure everything is running correctly and then somehow I close my other website and open up the new one. Am I on the right track?

I’m glad you stopped by to inquire about this. There’s actually 2 different versions of WordPress. What you’re describing is downloading the WordPress installation. This project is open source, and community maintained. The support for it comes from volunteers at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
This forum, however, is dedicated to folks that host their sites with us, WordPress.com. We are a managed environment. That means that we handle the nitty gritty details that need attention in order to have a successful site. This allows you to focus on the content.
