Activating email forwarding keeps asking for a login?
-
Hi there:
As per the instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/ I have set up email forwarding for an address on my custom domain to go to an ‘external’ email address.
The user at the other end keeps telling me that they received the activation email, but when they click the link to confirm the forwarding, they are prompted to login to WordPress.
This isn’t mentioned anywhere in the above support article, and they don’t have a login to WordPress (nor is there any real reason for them to do so).
Despite multiple attempts, the email forward (under Store > My Domains > Edit Domain > Email) still shows as needing verification (has the Resend Verification Email button).
Is it ‘just the case’ that you can only setup email forwards to WordPress.com registered email accounts? Or am I missing something entirely?
(And if it’s the former, cool, but it would be great if the help page mentioned that somewhere / was updated – then people like me don’t waste your time :) )
Thanks for any help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, I apologize for the confusion. We need to verify that the forwarding address consents to receive messages, to prevent abuse. If they forward the confirmation e-mail to you, you should be able to click on the link and login with your WordPress.com account, which will approve the forward.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or if there’s anything else I can do.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the feedback. I had a try at this and it doesn’t seem to work (or I’m being dumb).
They forwarded me the confirmation email from their email account. I clicked on the link, logged in with my WordPress account, but I get redirected to the Domains > Email bench with no result.
Instead the page says that it has resent a verification email to [other persons address]. The email forward in question remains unverified.
I’m guessing that’s related to the URL I end up being redirected to after clicking on the ‘Confirm Email Forward’ link in the email and logging in, which is:
https://%5Bmywebsite%5D/wp-admin/admin-post.php?action=domains_email_list&mailbox=enquiries&domain=%5Bmydomain%5D&destination=%5Bthe-other-persons-emailaddress%5D&updated=emailconfirmresendIn other words, all I seem to do when attempting to confirm on behalf of the non-Wordpress user is resend the confirmation.
Not sure if you have any more tricks I could try?

Hi there,
That URL looks a bit funny. Could you please try deleting the email forward you set up and entering it again? Then, you can have that person forward you the confirmation email so you can try confirming it again.
If you continue to have trouble with it, please forward us the confirmation to our email address support AT wordpress DOT com so we can take a closer look at what’s going on here.
Sorry for the trouble you’re having with this!

Seems like that did the trick.
For anyone else, the things I did that seemed to make a difference:
- Removed the email forward as per Supports suggestion and set it up exactly the same again
- Got the confirmation email forwarded to me from the third party
- Before clicking the link, this time I logged into WordPress in advance and left the browser open. When I clicked the email link, it simply accepted it, no weird redirect and done and dusted.
From the outside it looks like it doesn’t redirect cleanly if you have to login first, so start your session beforehand.
Hat tip to the Staff and Happiness Engineers for your help!
