Ad impressions and Earnings

Dear sir/madam,
For quite some time I have been wondering how you get to the earnings we make through the ads we run on our blog Lordsofthedrinks.com.
While the traffic on our website has been increasing with a steady pace, our earnings were running further and further back. In the last 4 months we didn’t even make 100 dollars in total, while we had between 2 and 2.5 k views every day.
The connection between ad impressions and earnings is also a mystery to me. In August 82.009 ad impressions got us $17.58, while a month earlier almost half (42,041) got us a similar $17.19.
Today I changed the theme of our website to one that was suggested by Wordads as more ads friendly. But I would really like to understand more about how it all works and what we can do to optimize our earnings.
