Add a Book List Widget
-
How about adding a book list widget where bloggers can list their favorite or recommended books that would appear as a small graphic of the cover (as in Vox). (Not just a text list.) Please. It would be sublime. Blogging bliss.

yes, this would be handy.
But
You can do this by just setting up a text widget. Like what I’ve done with what I’m currently reading. -
Or you could try using LibraryThing, as I’ve done in this posting on my blog:

LibraryThing is a neat service. I might have to switch over to that. I had been getting the pages for books from the publisher or Google Book Search and then tagging them “The Bookshelf” and putting them on my blogroll.
But I like that service better. Something to play with later today :)

Thanx all for the replies. I didn’t think I could use LibraryThing as the code to embed it into your blog uses javascript, which is not allowed in WP.com. Please explain Disembedded.

Try their beta stuff
http://www.librarything.com/blog/2006/12/graphical-widgets-for-lj-and-etc-first.php
(you have to figure out the URL for yourself rather than a nice drop down menu thing). It looks like you have to wrap it in image tags to get it to work.
Viewing the page source here
http://bookpress.wordpress.com/
leads to to the conclusion that your text widget should contain…
<A href="link to your library" target="_blank"><img src="php link generated using rules on the beta page"></A>I’m too tired to play with it right now. Maybe tomorrow night I’ll see if I can get my library to show.

@ disembedded
but your library shows the book covers. Is that possible with just that html code?
mine is just showing the title and author name :S

It looks like from viewing the page source, the image is a link to a flickr account. So a screen cap that was cropped and then uploaded?
And (in FF at least) if you right click it, you can view the image in a new tab/window and it’s definitely hosted at flickr.

I’m not even sort of new to this, I’m really new, (apologizing in advance.) I’m on the add a widget to your blog page on libraryThing and have no idea what to do, or how to do it. And thank you for having the question of how to do a book list and figuring it out ahead of time ;)

If you search the forums for Library Thing you’ll find a few threads on the subject. As far as I understand it, you can’t use it here. The answer in the first thread, to create a text widget and just list what you’re reading, is the best solution we have.
