Add a Domain

If I already own a domain address, what do I need to do to add this URL to my WordPress blog? I read an article that said I need a premium plan, but is it true that I need to spend $99 just to add my domain address to this WordPress blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Matt,

Your WordPress.com blog comes with a free address, like example.wordpress.com. You can get rid of the .wordpress.com part and use a custom domain name instead, like example.com. Adding a domain is a paid upgrade. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

However, with godaddy you can use domain forwarding. Here is the guide on how to do so. https://www.godaddy.com/help/manually-forwarding-or-masking-your-domain-name-422

Another option is to purchase hosting and host the wordpress site on your own hosting plan. What this means is you would have buy space on a shared server and then install wordpress on that server. The major drawback of using the domain forwarding method is your SEO may suffer slightly. Google doesn’t like redirects.

    Blake –

This was very helpful, thank you very much!

One more question, if you do not mind – as it was not an option when I forwarded my domain name, how do I ensure my that my domain name forwarding was also masked?

For example,I forwarded my GoDaddy domain name of thelastwordtoday.com to thelastwordtoday.wordpress.com, but want the visitor of the site to always/only see thelastwordtoday.com.

    Thank you!

WordPress.COM does not support domain forwarding and masking.

  • Hi there,

While we cannot prevent you from using domain forwarding and masking if you register your domain with a different provider, be aware that your site won’t work properly if you do that. We will not be able to accurately track your stats, your site will not be correctly indexed by search engines, it won’t be secure (won’t load over https), and your site will not be responsive on smaller screens. So we DO NOT recommend this as a way to connect your domain.

The correct way to connect a domain here is via the domain mapping upgrade. This upgrade is included in all our plans, not just Premium, so you can add it via the Personal Plan as well. First add the plan at My Site ->Plans, and then add the domain at My Site ->Domains.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

@bachancellor, please don’t suggest domain masking as an option to users in future.

  • There is also no need to get hosting as @bachancellor suggested. That is only necessary if you want to use the self-hosted version of WordPress, called WordPress.org, which is something completely separate and different from WordPress.com.

    WordPress.com and WordPress.org

I did not suggest domain masking only forwarding. They are entirely different.

  • @theblakeadam

The link you provided explains both. And domain forwarding is still not a good option, as it will not make the WordPress.com site appear at the actual domain, and the site will still not be indexed by search engines at that domain.
