Add a Memberlist
-
Hi, is there a way to add a Memberlist to a wordpress.com site? I’m aware of the “Follow” link visitor can use but I was wanting a Memberlist that displays so people can view it and register to the site if they like.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No there is not. However, you can set up membership on a a WordPress.ORG install. Read the differences here please http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I already spent a month building my huge website on wordpress.com that has over 450 pages, what you are suggesting is to dump all that work to move to wordpress.orq which is not a website its a BLOG.

A blog is a website and any WordPress.com blog or WordPress.org install blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based, but let’s put that aside for the moment while you read the characteristics of post based and page based structures here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/
You can use any theme here http://wordpress.com/themes/ to create a page based structure ie. a website rather than a post based structure ie. a blog. Before you make any decisions at all read this comparison carefully please http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog, without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Also note that you can export your content out of a WordPress.com blogs and import it into a WordPress.org install easily.

The exporting the content out of a WordPress.com blogs and import it into a WordPress.org install sounds like a possibility, but from what I read it sounds like somewhere along the line there is going to be a charge, if its not the software its the hosting or accessibility to plugins. Also I’d be concerned about it actually taking all the material like urls posted on each page and creating the new pages with the url in place. In other words, accurately making an exact copy of my already existing wordpress.com website to wordpress.org.

If you choose to move to a WordPress.org install then you do have to hire a web host. http://wordpress.org/hosting/

I figured as such, well I won’t be moving then, but I would like to say and what really has happened here is, wordpress has deleberately made .com inferior to .org, and the reason behind that excapes me. The “safety” or security reason is not eccaptable because Whats safe for .org is safe for .com. I can’t begin to understand why .com is so stripped of all the great features .org has. You can install plugins, you can’t edit the css stylesheet without paying, you can’t do this you can’t do that, but get .org and you can do everything for free!

This is multiuser blogging platform. Here all blogs are sharing a common architecture and one bad plugin or script could bring down many blogs. In the case of a WordPress.ORRG self hosted installs they are free standing. In other words you can muck up royally and the only site you bring down is your own. Here at WordPress.com we have Staff support. All WordPress.org provides is free software and peer support forums.
I hope that clarifies things for you, and as your original question re: setting up site membership question has been answered, I bid you Adieu.

Ok, well then obviously the multiuser blogging platform is not a good system, it limits its users dramatically in negative way. The multiuser blogging platform should be rewritten to accommodate creativity with full features. Everywhere I read people are being told you need .org to do that, so really .com’s multiuser blogging platform is not desirable by anyone that is serious about building a website.
Thanks for you help in answering my questions, although I figured as much.
