Add a new home page but don’t lose existing blog entries

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I have Free WordPress ONLY. I want to change my front page so that my blog doesn’t appear there anymore, but I don’t want to lose all the content already in my blog – just move it so it isn’t the front page of my website anymore. I’ve designed the new home page, but don’t want to mess about in ‘settings’ ‘reading’ for fear of completely losing the existing blog and not being able to recover it. Can anyone advise how to keep my blog but not on the front page, please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Changing the homepage will not remove any of your blog posts. If you’ve already published the new page that you want to set as the homepage, please follow the steps here:

Hi and thank you for your reply. I’ve looked at the link and some of the info doesn’t seem to tally up with what I see on my website. For example, under “Your homepage displays” I don’t see “Your latest posts” or “a static page” as options, only EITHER “Default” (which is where it’s currently set) or a dropdown showing all of my custom pages. Underneath that, it says “Default posts page” which is set to “None” and the only other options are the same list of my custom pages, It doesn’t show me my default blog page as one of the options at all. Therefore, it’s impossible for me to access wherever it is that my blog resides, let alone to set it to being a page that isn’t my front page. Am I making sense? I’m wondering if this is because of the Theme I chose when I first set up my website (which is apparently Book Lite), but I’d want to be certain a different theme could fix the issue before fooling around with that, as I suspect it is difficult to change a theme once set (perhaps it isn’t – you’ll know better than me!)

Anyway, any additional guidance would be much appreciated. Here’s the link to what I described above about the available settings under “Reading Settings” https://wordpress.com/settings/reading/sianturnerauthor.wordpress.com

  • No worries. Let’s work through this piece by piece.

For example, under “Your homepage displays” I don’t see “Your latest posts” or “a static page” as options

Do you see the options when looking through this link?

I’m happy to change the setting directly from my side of things. I just need to confirm which page you want to be displayed as the front page? and which page do you want to assign your posts to be published on?

Once we have this sorted we can move on to the other questions.

Hi and thank you for replying. No, I don’t see the options needed when looking through the link you sent. I would like a page I recently set up named ‘Home Page’ as my home page. My posts are currently on what comes up as the front page of my website, but which I cannot access (except to add new posts) i.e. I can’t see it on my list of named pages at all. I would be very grateful for your advice/assistance as it is no longer helpful to me to have a blog on my front page (if indeed it ever was – I think I was under the impression you had to have it this way for a free site). Thanks again.

  • Hey there!

I would like a page I recently set up named ‘Home Page’ as my home page.

Ok, so that can be done via: https://sianturnerauthor.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php > Homepage settings > Select “Static front page” > Choose Home Page from the first drop down.

Hom Page > is quite the way down in the list.

This means you would need to create/set a page your posts – is there a page in mind for that?

My blog currently appears on a page for posts that displays as my website’s front page, but which I don’t see on my list of pages when I’m in ‘Admin’. This is the issue – I can’t work out if it’s possible to set some other page as my front page without losing what I have because I don’t understand how (if at all) I could move my existing posts/the entire post page elsewhere because it’s like a ‘ghost page’ with no name! I think I’m 100% capable of setting another page as my home page, but am worried I’d effectively be overwriting/deleting the blog page that exists wherever it is that it exists. Help appreciated.

  • Hi there! It sounds like you want to set a different page as your front page while keeping your existing posts on a separate blog page. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any content or overwrite anything. Here’s a quick explanation and step-by-step guide to help you achieve this:

    1. Create a new page (Pages → Add New) for your blog posts if you haven’t already, and give it a title like “Blog” or “Posts.” This page can be blank otherwise, a title is all you need.
    2. Go to Customize → Homepage Settings.
    3. Select “A static page” under “Your homepage displays.”
    4. Choose the page you’d like to set as your front page from the “Homepage” dropdown menu.
    5. Select the “Blog” page you created earlier from the “Posts page” dropdown menu.
    6. Click “Publish” to save your changes.

Now you’ll have a new front page, and your blog posts will be displayed on the separate page you created. Please note you will also want to edit your menu to add a link to the new “blog” page so visitors can find it easily.

    Happy blogging!

Sorted! Thank you to everyone who contributed their advice. Got there, but it was a bit of a leap of faith in the end :)
