Add a video in a widget

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
    I am using wordpress on a free plan. I would like to put a widget with a video. My plan does not allow me to download video, so I wanted to use the link in the widget to make the video appear (using the video widget, which says we can display a video from youtube etc). So I inserted it with the Facebook link. But the video doesn’t appear, the widget only displays the link. Is it because of my free plan? Is there a way I could display my video in a widget?
    Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    Yes you are able to do this with your free WordPress.com plan :)

    You can embed a YouTube video in the video widget using a short code. Instructions of how to do this can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#embedding-with-a-shortcode

    Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions please let me know

    @amandasjackson,

    The video widget doesn’t use shortcode. I think you meant insert shortcode into a text widget.

    Into the video widget you would insert either the video URL — this might only work for YouTube — or, if you have the VideoPress upgrade, you can add videos from files to the widget. It’s odd that there is evidently no support page for the video widget. At least I haven’t found one.

    Thank you for clarifying that :)

    I also meant to include what you did regarding the video widget, but was distracted by my 5 year old and hit send too soon :) I tested this on my demo site, using the URL and the video widget, and it worked. I just had to select the “Insert from URL” option located in the video widget. But like you said, it was a YouTube video.
