Add an New invite to blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I have made my blog. I have made my blog private only to invited people. I went to Users: Invite new, then I added the email of the person. Placed a message, and then, send invitation.
    The person got the Invite from me: “Accept Invitation”. The person accepted it it took the person to my site showing all what I can see, like;
Dashboard, they could go into post and can “add a post”. I don’t want them doing that. Am I missing a setting in which they can just see my posts and not be able to change stuff in my blog, as if they have the permission to change my blog. Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • It sounds like you invited them with a “Role” where they can change things (perhaps Editor or Administrator?).

If you only want them to be able to read your blog, then you should Remove them, and then send them a new invitation, but make sure you set them to be a “Follower” (or “Viewer”) only.

You can find out a bit more about how invitations work here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

    and Roles here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

    Hi Beau,

Thanks for you help. I did make them as a “Viewer” only, sent another invite. They accepted, got in the site. They could still go to “my sites”, and add invite and pages and rest they can still change. Please help to get this fixed.
    Thanks

  • The only invitation I see on your site was sent to yourself, which means that when you come back into the site, you’ll be using your existing (Administrator) account.

You don’t currently have any other users with access to your site either, so I think you’re maybe doing this test and you’re ending up still logged into your account, so you can access everything.

If you’re sending a test invitation, you’ll need to make sure that you do it to a different email address, which doesn’t belong to your account. If you’re testing it on your own computer, then you’ll also want to make sure that you log out of your WordPress.com account before accepting the invitation, since otherwise it will accept it under your current account.

    Hi Beau,

Ok , thanks I got that. I tested on another computer and then accepted the invitation, this time it took me to the wordpress.com site. Do they have to create a blog? what if they don’t want to. Because when they go to login it asks for username and pw. So I understand they have to register. But when they go to register, it ask for email, username, & pw. Do they have to do all that, cant they just view my blog? if I can send them an URL to open? Please help. Thanks Zarir

    Hi there,
You can have either a public or a private blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

    See here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

The person will have to register a username account but does not need to register a blog. They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.

Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

Bottom line: They need to accept the reality that unless they register an account which is easily done and requires only an email address (no blog registration is required) the software cannot allow blog access because they could be a hacker. Obviously the software has to be able to differentiate between the two and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog.
