Add Author Widget?
-
Is there any way to add an author widget? I am writing an article on using WordPress for writing courses. The Author widget is critical to figuring out where posts are.
I used my own install on http://www.idratherbewriting.com/composition to create the course just how I wanted it. I even had to create an author’s page from the tiga theme.
The article I’m writing is geared toward people who wouldn’t normally have their own web hosts. If you can just add the Author widget to WordPress.com’s list of widgets, it would be perfect.

There are three ways you can use to achieve what you want that are currently available to you.
(1) Did you know that some themes do have author page templates? You can find out which ones they are at http://engtech.wordpress.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/(2) If you wish to use a theme that does not have this feature then you can create an “Authors” category as a “parent” category and “child” sub-categories for each author under their names. Then by having each author assign their posts to the correct Category and Sub-category you can easily achieve what you want.
(3) Each author can choose to place a “byline” in the posts they make.
Here are some resources that will be useful

Best bet would be to submit this suggestion via feedback once the weekend’s over along with a pointer to this thread.
That feature is pretty much theme dependant though and every single theme would have to be rewritten to allow for it. Author pages isn’t in the WordPress core files. I have it on my own blog with MistyLook but very few themes do something like that.
I lean more towards having the authors also as tags and just creating a text widget with links to those categories like TT suggests.
