Add columns to Twenty Ten

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to have two content columns and one sidebar in my Twenty Ten blog with short blog entries stacked side by side, something like this (most recent blog first, in this case blog 6):

    Blog 6 Blog 5
    Blog 4 Blog 3
    Blog 2 Blog 1

I’m using Twenty Ten because I need to have active links on the front page. Can anyone give me or point me to CSS code I can insert in the CSS Stylesheet Editor that will do this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Can anyone give me or point me to CSS code I can insert in the CSS Stylesheet Editor that will do this?

All CSS editing of themes here at WordPress.com is theme specific. CSS editing can only be used to change appearance and cannot be used to change functionality or the blog structure which is provided by the code in the underlying template which we cannot edit. No style-sheets from anywhere else can be used at all.

Oh, dear. Long wasted day for me.

Have you read this e custom design entry?

Does the Custom Design upgrade let me edit HTML?
No. The Custom Design upgrade allows you to edit fonts and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup, PHP code, or content. You can choose to apply your custom fonts or custom stylesheet to any of the themes available on WordPress.com. Some themes, like the plain but versatile Sandbox and Toolbox, are blank canvases waiting for your custom fonts, CSS and images. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

    Yes, it said:

The CSS tab allows you tweak the appearance of your blog to get it looking exactly how you want, using CSS code. This section requires CSS knowledge. If you don’t know CSS, you can get help from our support team

I wonder how many users know what PHP code is or an HTML markup. If I knew that stuff I wouldn’t use wordpress.com.

A couple of themes here will show two columns of posts on the main page. Inuit Types is one and Under the Influence is another and I believe there is at least one more but I can’t think of it.

Just to clarify, what you want to do is not something that can be done via CSS. It would require access to, and hacking of, the underlying PHP script files for the theme and we do not have access to those.

WordPress.com is a multiuser blogging platform. Here all blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template. Any editing affects all blogs wearing the same theme so that’s why only Staff can access and edit those files.

Are you sure you cannot locate a theme that comes close to what you want? The theme I use on my blog Inuit Types without a custom design upgrade has optional layouts and so do many other themes. I chose to display my posts in two columns – click my username and you will see what I mean.
    Blog 6 Blog 5
    Blog 4 Blog 3
    Blog 2 Blog 1

I can choose how many posts to display on the front page > Appearance > Theme Options
I selected Single Post Featured Image but I did not insert a featured image. That resulted in two columns of posts.
I chose to use the excerpt box overriding the automatic excerpt function provided by the theme. Then I inserted 4 active links on the same theme in my test blog and they all appeared and were active on the front page.

I’m sorry I didn’t refresh or I would have been less “wordy” above. Good to see you this evening. :)

Thanks guys. I started with Inuit Types this morning but found the links I was using were not active on the front page. I would like to have a format like timethief’s

      and

have active links on the front page — links to more than just a separate full blog page but rather to outside web articles I am referring to.

timethief- You told me this morning that one could not have active links on the front page of Inuit Types. Are you saying here that you figured out how in your test blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

I started with Inuit Types this morning but found the links I was using were not active on the front page.

Please try the settings I used above as I’m looking at my test blog and it’s doing what you want.

I went here > Appearance > Theme Options and selected Single Post Featured Image and “saved”. That resulted in two columns of posts on the front page.

I chose to override the automatic excerpt function provided by the theme. I put all the text I wanted plus 4 active links in the post excerpt box and published it. All the links were active on the front page.

Okay, I got an active link on my front page in the Inuit Types theme by copying the html code with a link, not the visual lines, into the excerpt boxy. Long day, but I think I finally have the basics of what I need. So, in fact there CAN be active links on the front page of Inuit Types.

Yes, but only if you use the excerpt box to over-ride the excerpt provided by the theme. :)
