Add media function mess

What on earth has been done to the “add media” function? It was working fine, but now has been changed, probably just for change’s sake.

While I was able before to add thumbnail photos to posts, the thumbnail now is, well, King Kong sized. And full, centered photos fall off the page. Jeez.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – I’m sorry you’ve encountered some issues with media – thanks for the report.

you can read more about the changes to media handling here .

You can tweak the size of your image in the first post by clicking the Edit Image icon on it and modifying the width and height. I’ll do some testing to see what the trouble might be with thumbnail posts.

And full, centered photos fall off the page. Jeez.

Could you please give me a link to a post where this is happening so I can take a look? Thanks very much.

  • I’ve replicated the problem with your thumbnail images and will report it to the developers. Thanks for your patience.

I’ve created a test draft post on your site – would you mind leaving it there until this is resolved? Thanks for your help.

  • Would you mind trying to insert a thumbnail again and let me know if you still get the too-large size?

Thanks for the attention, Kathryn. For whatever reason, I can now make the thumbnails smaller. I could not before. So that problem is solved.

I cannot give you a link to a post where full, centered photos ran off the page because I wouldn’t do a post with that, but it did it repeatedly in the preview yesterday. I’ll try again later and see what happens.

As for your creating a draft post on my site for a test, I don’t see one there now, so maybe you deleted it already.

    Glad to hear it.

Sure. If you manage to repeat the centering problem, just show me a link to the post, even if it’s in a draft state, I’ll be able to view it.

If the thumbnail issue is now gone, feel free to delete it, or let me know and I’ll do it for you.

I still have the problem of the photo going off the right side when it’s centered.

This photo I used has a thin black and white border, and you can see that it is cut off on the right side. Here’s the link. It’s a draft. Thanks for any help.

  • Hi patzmich – thanks for the link.

There’s actually no need to center that photo if you want it to take up the full width of the column. I removed the centering but it’s still being cut off, because it’s simply too large to be fully displayed in the column as its current size.

The current image size you selected is “medium,” which on your site is defined as 600 pixels wide. Since your middle column is only 480 pixels wide, it is just too narrow to accommodate an image that’s 600 pixels wide, so the medium-sized image gets cut off.

You have a couple of options:

    1) You can manually edit the photo in your media library to scale it down to 480 pixels wide. More about image resizing.

    2) You can reset the size of “medium” images to 480px, instead of 600px, under Settings > Media. To do that, next to Medium size – Max Width, change 600 to 480.

If you need further help with this, just let me know.

Now I understand why you are a Happiness Engineer.

Thanks for the help. I have it straightened out.

  • My pleasure! Glad you got it sorted.
