Add new post screen has changed

I don’t know what I’ve done and I’m not tech savvy. I went into WordPress to add a new post and instead of the screen I’ve been seeing for the past two years to write my post, I’m looking at an odd screen that says ‘start writing or type to choose block’. The entire format has changed. In the past there was a spot for me to type in the title and then I’d see the URL that was assigned. Beneath that was a big space to type my post. And a tool bar with options like add a picture, add headings, add a link, etc.

All gone. Well some of the things I had before are around and off to the side and I can bring back a different tool bar but now I’m getting things to show block settings, add to reusable blocks, and remove block. I’ve never seen this ‘block’ thing before.

How do I get back to the standard posting screen? Thanks!

  • Hi there,

On what site are you working? The account you’re using to post here does not own any sites on WordPress.com.

If you’re using the open source WordPress software at another host, please ask for help at https://wordpress.org/support/ instead.

You can disable the new block editor added in WordPress 5.0 on a self-hosted site by installing the Classic Editor plugin:

    Classic Editor

Thanks, I was able to add the plug in for the classic editor and everything is back to how it should be.

  • Glad you’ve got it, @cheryl2017. For more help with your self-hosted site, you’ll want to head over to the correct forums at https://wordpress.org/support, since the advice in our forum is specific to WordPress.com. Cheers!
