add new user, add member area, add plugin

    Hi guys,
we have a PREMIUM account on WordPress.org. Last days I noticed that I do not have the possibility to add new users as I am used to from my WordPress.org theme. Instead I have to convince (invite!) people to become members of WordPress.com, right? I also can not add a member area and I can not add plugins to cover those features.
Premium means outstanding, but there is nothing outstanding here. I am really disappointed, since I recommended WordPress.com to open our page and to pay for it.
The whole thing seems to drag people to WordPress.com whatever it takes even though we payed for the webspace. Congratulations, you hid it very well, seems there is no way to know about this before you pay for it.

  • Hi there,

we have a PREMIUM account on WordPress.org. Last days I noticed that I do not have the possibility to add new users as I am used to from my WordPress.org theme.

What is the URL of your self-hosted WordPress.org site? I checked your account and you have a premium upgrade for serviceaustria.blog, a WordPress.com site. To read on the difference on WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you can click on our support link:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I also can not add a member area and I can not add plugins to cover those features.

Adding plugins is a feature only available to Business Plan users:
    http://wordpress.com/plans

We have instructions on how to set up a membership site if that is what you are looking to install a plugin for. It is limited compared to the options you could get with a self-hosted site, but it is nevertheless a viable option:

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Hi and thanks for the reply.

You just confirmed what I wrote. People have to become a member of WordPress.com and ask for invitation by us. That won’t work. I do not want to appear to our clients as trying to drag them to unrelated pages. People get more and more concerned about it, just like me, too.

I tried to open a password protected page since its information is not that important that some breeches would cause damage. But there I can not add posts; it is a static page.

There is no way of protecting categories either.

I thought of password protected posts, but that looks very bad on the front page.

Then I had the idea of a password protection for the “continue reading” feature. But there is nothing like that.

I found this thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/password-protect-a-free-site?replies=9 from a guy with the same problem.

Well, again. I am deeply disappointed and try to convince my client to move to a self hosted page since I need to avoid any unforeseen surprises with a business tariff.

    Thank you anyway
