Add permanent heading above posts

    Hi. On the homepage of my magazine-style blog, thenecessary.net, I want to add a permanent heading (or label or banner) below the header and above the posts. The heading will say STORIES.

    I’ve tried to fake it by using a sticky, imageless post titled “STORIES” (with spaces and dingbats to make it look different from post titles), but it will fool no one. It looks “clickable” and it shows up under “recent posts” — not what I want at all.

    Is it possible to create a STORIES label using CSS? How would I do that?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there!

    CSS is more for styling, rather than creating the content so we wouldn’t be able to help with that but, feel free to jump into live chat directly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact so we can discuss some other alternatives of achieving what you’re looking for.

    Ah, got it. Thank you, fresatomica.

    Hi again. I tried the live chat, but the person felt that inserting the heading STORIES would require drastic changes — like switching to a static homepage. I then proposed a Plan B, which he said sounded more like a CSS problem.

    So here I am back with you. My Plan B: There’s a thin (1px) yellow border at the bottom of the header. I could easily make it thicker — 45px — to match the yellow stripe I’ve added to the photos above it.

    Can I then embed the word STORIES in that yellow stripe? It would serve nicely as a heading for the posts below the border. Possible using CSS?

    Thanks again.

  • Hi, while it’s out of scope of what support can offer (though the community may have more advice) I can give you this:

    .home #article-wrap:before {
    	content: "2591STORIES2591";
    	font-size: 3em;
    	letter-spacing: .2em;
    }

    Play around with that a bit and you’re likely to find something you’ll like. You can read more about this feature by searching for “CSS Before” — there are lots of tutorials showing what you can do.

    Good luck! And if you need to hire someone, we recommend UpWork.com.

    That worked brilliantly! Thank you.
