  I would like to add a slider to my site, or a series of photographs that move across the page. Is there a widget or some other way I can accomplish that?

  Sure, you can add a slideshow following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/

  Hi,

  Thanks for the response.

  I tried both ways but I was not offered the “add slideshow” option. Is that with only certain WordPress versions or packages?

  You’ll need to first upload multiple images while writing or editing the post or page that you want to add it to.

  Have you done that?
