add tagline to Rubric theme (have css upgrade)

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have the css upgrade, and I want to add a tagline to the Rubric theme under the title. I’ve read Add Tagline to Rubric, but I’m confused. I’ve put a text widget (per. instructions) in my sidebar which says:

    <div class=”mytagline”>
    Zen, Osho…
    </div>

    and this in my css editor:

    .mytagline {
    position: absolute;
    top: [value];
    left: [value];
    }

    #container {position: relative;}

    First problem, I don’t want the tagline text to be in the sidebar, which is where it goes (right?) with a text widget. I want it to be under the title.

    Secondly, no change is happening anywhere else when I preview the css changes.

    How come nothing’s ever easy around here?

    Hello there. I’m sorry that you are having such a hard time. The Rubric theme is not new. The first version was released way back on 1/20/2004 and the 1.5 version released in 2005.

    Like all other wordpress.com themes it was originally coded to run on wordpress.org software and was “adapted” to run on wordpress.com. The original versions did not provide for a tagline in the HTML in the underlying template. CSS does not generate HTML and we cannot edit templates here. Therefore devblog suggested using inline CSS in the text widget as the only means of providing for a tagline in this theme.

    I know that you have put a lot if work into modifying this theme but perhaps it may not be the best choice for you. Please do not be offended when I say this, but what we bloggers see on the surface is not what coders see “under the hood”.

    Perhaps if you simply asked devblog, which theme he would recommend to CSS edit and create the appearance you want, including a full header and tagline, may be the way to go.

    Thank you for the response, timethief. I might at some time ask devblog to recommend a theme. Right now, I’m so tired of messing with it all, I need to just let it go for a while. I would like to have a tagline, but if that is not possible, then oh well… Life goes on, right? I can live with something resembling a tagline in the sidebar, for now at least.

    Thing is, I like the Rubric theme, I like the background. I don’t know how the creator did that. I’ve tried to get a background image, but can’t. It’s not just a gradient. I think it’s a repeat thing somehow. But I’m not going to concern myself with it right now.

    Give you guys a break from me too. :-)

    Is what you like about the background simply the gradient shading?

    This article looks in one of those nooks in the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) section: filters. There are all kinds of filters that add neat effects to your Web pages. The one demonstrated here adds a gradient coloring effect that you can apply to anything that needs a little lively coloring (in moderation, please).

    You know what, timethief! Scratch everything I just said. I’ve decided to go with a different theme. Every time I turn around I’m running into problems with the Rubric theme. If you’ll take a look at my blog now, you’ll see that I have a nice background image. Everything seems to fit pretty well, but I need to make the print a little darker (like totally black) especially in the sidebar. I don’t see anywhere in the layout of this theme where I can make the print as black as possible. I don’t think it is as dark as it could be as it is. That plus no tagline, etc., etc., etc.!!! So yes, someone please recommend a good theme for me.

    It looks good with that background image. :)

    Thank you, timethief. :-) So I guess I’ll watch for devblog, and ask him to recommend a theme. Looks like he’s taking Friday night off. Can’t say I blame ’em.

    You’re welcome and best wishes with the blog. :)
