add top site subjects

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi again! I can’t figure out how to add information on the top of my BROMLEY THEME site.
What I would like to add are the following words to make it easier for my website users to find information about subjects I’ve got to offer. (I don’t believe you call these “widgets”, am I right?) But anyhow I don’t know what you call them and where to find that part of the menu to do so.
The words I want to add are: HOME ACCOMMODATION WALKS & SIGHTS RESTAURANTS PAGES
Like in the example page of Bromley, once done this you can create “submenus/titles” For example I would like to add under ACCOMMODATION : in Spain, in France etc. How can I do this?

Also… I would like to have my website in different languages. Can I add somewhere a flag with the language users can choose? If yes, where can I translate the information in the correct language?

And last but not least, I was trying to add CATEGORIES. I was able to add ACCOMMODATIONS but I also addes by mistake “Sin categoria” which I can’t take away!!!

I wanted to check websites used by other BROMLEY USERS too,… but I’m unable to open all tree of them you recommend. How can I get in contact with those people and how can I check their sites?

    Thanks again!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Like in the example page of Bromley, once done this you can create “submenus/titles” For example I would like to add under ACCOMMODATION : in Spain, in France etc. How can I do this?

I’m not quite sure whether you’re referring to the custom menu or the featured posts. I’ve created a picture to distinguish between the two:

    Bromley

If you’re referring to the Custom Menu, you can read more about setting that up here:

    Menus

If you’re referring to the featured posts, instructions on setting those up can be found here (under the heading “Featured Content”):

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/bromley/support/

Also… I would like to have my website in different languages. Can I add somewhere a flag with the language users can choose? If yes, where can I translate the information in the correct language?

There are a few different ways to do this, each with their pros and cons. We broke down the various methods here:

    Set Up a Multilingual Site

Can you give those a look and let me know how you want to proceed?

And last but not least, I was trying to add CATEGORIES. I was able to add ACCOMMODATIONS but I also addes by mistake “Sin categoria” which I can’t take away!!!

So, Sin categoria is currently set as your default category. To remove it, first, you’ll need to select a new default category here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-writing.php

Then, you can remove it here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

I wanted to check websites used by other BROMLEY USERS too,… but I’m unable to open all tree of them you recommend. How can I get in contact with those people and how can I check their sites?

Hmm…I don’t know of an easy way to search for blogs by theme. There are three blogs that use the Bromley theme listed at the bottom here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/bromley/support/

If you would like, you could check out those sites and reach out to the users via their blog contact information.

    Hi Jeremy,

First of all Thanks for going through all my questions step-by-step.
About the multilingual question you said:

There are a few different ways to do this, each with their pros and cons. We broke down the various methods here
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog
Can you give those a look and let me know how you want to proceed?

I took a look and I do like this given example:

Here are some examples of multilingual blogs on WordPress.com
    http://lamaleva.com/ – English/French/Spanish

I would like to have only ONE website where visitors can just click on the language they prefer. Not posting in different languages and they must scroll all the time. What to do next in this case?

Thanks so far… lots of things to read and check out for me. Hope I’ll manage.

    Hi Jeremy,

I’m really in trouble here. I’m desperate to set up a menu. Checked the support on MENUS, but it just doesn’t work the way which is shown on the video.

    Menus

I open Appearance –> Menu. I add a Menu Name (ex. Walks and Sights, Accommodation, Restaurants) I select under Theme Locations : Top Menu.

Under Pages nothing is shown under “Most recent”. I still got the same stupid name “Acerca de” which I don’t want. Checking my website still nothing is shown on top!

What am I missing or doing wrong. And why, when I try again I got the information that those names do already exist? Where are they???
Please help me out again. I would really like getting started.

    Thanks in advance,

I would like to have only ONE website where visitors can just click on the language they prefer. Not posting in different languages and they must scroll all the time. What to do next in this case?

The example you referenced (http://lamaleva.com/) actually uses a total of three sites to achieve this look:

    http://lamaleva.com/
    http://fr.lamaleva.com/
    http://es.lamaleva.com/

I can definitely help you setup the same (es.travel-dogfriendly.com for example), but I would just like to confirm this is how you want to proceed. This will require multiple blogs.

I’m really in trouble here. I’m desperate to set up a menu. Checked the support on MENUS, but it just doesn’t work the way which is shown on the video.

First, I’d like to clarify exactly what you’re looking for. Currently, you have several pages shown here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

You’re trying to put a link to those at the top of the page. Is that correct? I only ask because you also have categories (groupings of posts) with similar titles here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

If you want, we can put a “category” link in your menu so that when someone clicks on that link, they’re shown all the posts in that category.

Alternatively, if we just put a page link in the top menu, the content will just show whatever is on that particular page. It won’t automatically add new posts. Does that distinction make sense? It would be the difference between having a non-changing page and one that automatically updates with new posts.

The process is just a bit different depending on what you want so I want to make sure before we get started!

    Hi Jeremy,

As you can see, I’ve added finally different names to my menu. (after trying for at least 3 hours!!! PFFF) I was able to even add some Sub items. So I’m happy with that.

The idea is that the HOME site will have the possibility to choose between the language the user wants and this way they’ll have the text in ENGLISH, SPANISH or DUTCH (in the future probable GERMAN and FRENCH too).
It would be great if you could help me setting up for the moment al least an es/traveldogfriendly.com and a nl/traveldogfriendly.com page.

Now I’m stuck with the “static” website, which is HOME if I’m right. I can’t figure out how to get the widgets as SEARCH, ARCHIVES, CATEGORIES (etc.) on the right hand site of the page. If I enter in the dashboard page it’s all “dark” and I don’t know what to do to make it visible.
IT is visible on f. Ex. The Accommodation page. I don’t understand why not on each site??

Important would be to have on the MENU sites of ACCOMMODATION, WALKS & SIGHTS, RESTAURANTS, LINKS and ABOUT ME a widget that says “HOME” to make users get back easily to the “static” HOMEpage. How to do that?

I’m not sure if I used correctly the “extra information” while setting up the MENU. When they ask you to “show…. if” , “select page”… etc. Could you check if what I’ve done is correct?

Jeremys text: You’re trying to put a link to those at the top of the
page. Is that correct? I only ask because you also have categories
(groupings of posts) with similar titles here:

Yes, but I think I got that now,… right? I’ll try to post some articles so that it looks different anyway.

Only thing I would like is to put some so called “Featured post/images” like in the BROMLEY example on the HOME page, so that people are able to click beside using the TOP MENU quickly to each category (Accommodation, Walks&Sights, Restaurants, Links, About me)
When I want to add these, I must write the text already on the Photograph I add, is that correct? And I only do this on the HOME page and not with the rest?

Thanks again Jeremy, and I apologize for driving you crazy (I imagine…)

    Howdy!

    Please see below:

It would be great if you could help me setting up for the moment al least an es/traveldogfriendly.com and a nl/traveldogfriendly.com page.

We can definitely do that! The steps are laid out for you here:

    Set Up a Multilingual Site

Can you give those steps a try and let me know where you get stuck?

Now I’m stuck with the “static” website, which is HOME if I’m right. I can’t figure out how to get the widgets as SEARCH, ARCHIVES, CATEGORIES (etc.) on the right hand site of the page. If I enter in the dashboard page it’s all “dark” and I don’t know what to do to make it visible.
IT is visible on f. Ex. The Accommodation page. I don’t understand why not on each site??

The widgets you currently have active under the Archive Sidebar Widget here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

Will not show up on your home page. They will only show up on your home page if you have your home page setup to display your most recent posts here:

    https://traveldogfriendly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

They should be showing under your archive pages like this though:

    http://travel-dogfriendly.com/category/accommodations/

I’m clarifying with the seller why they’re not showing up. I’ll let you know what I find out!

Important would be to have on the MENU sites of ACCOMMODATION, WALKS & SIGHTS, RESTAURANTS, LINKS and ABOUT ME a widget that says “HOME” to make users get back easily to the “static” HOMEpage. How to do that?

Looks like you were able to set this up already!

I’m not sure if I used correctly the “extra information” while setting up the MENU. When they ask you to “show…. if” , “select page”… etc. Could you check if what I’ve done is correct?

“Correctly” depends on what you are trying to accomplish. We have a guide that explains this a bit more here:

    Widgets

Can you take a look there?

Yes, but I think I got that now,… right? I’ll try to post some articles so that it looks different anyway.

    Yep! Looks like it.

Instructions on how to setup that area can be found here (under “Featured Content”):

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/bromley/

Can you give that a look?

    Hi Jeremy,

it has been a while but I´m unable to work with WordPress… !

The links you´re giving me are not helpful enough, because when I click for example on the http://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog/#option-3-two-blogs after reading I click on the custom support and it doesn´t explain me at all HOW to get on the Top Menu bar the language: Español and Nederlands.
I haven´t still got a clue how to create those extra sites to give readers the oportunity to switch from language to language.

What I really want is that people are able to switch under the menu title”accommodation” to the country where they´re looking for accommodation. The same I need with the “restaurant” title. I thought this would be possible using WIDGETS on each site with a scroll down tool instead of what I did so far… a long list under Accommodation on the TOP.
How can I create this. And more than ever HOW on EARTH do I make those Widgets available and visable. The first time I tried I had it all right ut since then it doesn´t work.

    Please help me out again.

    Hi there,

I’m sorry if the document isn’t clear. What you may be stuck on is the first step. You need to create an entirely new site for each of the languages which you want to have your blog in. You can create a new site by following the instructions right here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/#adding-new-site%C2%A0to-an-existing-account

Since you are using a custom domain (travel-dogfriendly.com), you appear to want to use a subdomain to keep the different languages separate, so you’ll probably want to create domain mapping for each one. So you could create a blog who’s blog name is traveldogfriendlynl.wordpress.com and buy the domain mapping “nl.travel-dogfriendly.com”. The same thing for Spanish: traveldogfriendlyes.wordpress.com could have “es.travel-dogfriendly.com”. Here’s a help file on how to map those domains, but let me know if you run in to troubles and I’ll help out!

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Once you have your blogs set up, you will need to set the same theme up for each of your blogs and then it’s up to you. You can rewrite the content in the correct language from scratch or you can export it and re-import it so that all of it looks the same and then translate it later.

Once you get your different blogs set up, then you can start exploring how you want the menus to work. Right now though, you need the blogs in place before you can address those other topics!

Let me know if you have any questions!
