add users

i am inviting my users/readers but they cannot get to the site. They are being asked for a login which I do not have and neither do they. What is going on? I want to invite them and have them be able to immediately access the site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The folks you invite to a private blog will need a WordPress.com account. They do not have to set up blogs, but the accounts are what allows wp.com to know who they are, to know you want them to see your site. You cannot just say I’d like Jane Buck to visit my private blog. Who knows how many “Jane Bucks” there are?
The account means that the person has registered an email address with wp.com. It’s the email address that wp.com recognizes who is who.
To set up an account the only personal info collected is the email address. You guests will need to choose a password to access their accounts, and also a username. Names do not have to be “real” names.

I don’t want users to have to sign up, remember a password, etc. Is there anyway around this? If I don’t have the site private will that change? If so, how do I switch it?
