Adding a category for items in the Food Menus in the Confit theme
-
Hi Guys,
I am having an issue setting a category for items under the Confit theme.
I have created the custom menu, assigned a category to it and created a test post with that category and they all go through correctly.
The problem is that I am unable to assign a Category to the items that we create under the ‘Food Menu’ that comes with the Confit theme.
I have tried adding a Menu Section and also a Item Label but neither of these work with the categories section.

Any help is appreciated.

I’m not sure I follow, but I think the problem is as follows:
“Food” is both an item and a category in your custom menu named “Menus.” The category “Food” had been assigned to a test post named “Test food category,” but this does not appear in your drop-down menu because you haven’t added it as a sub-item to your custom menu. A link to this post should be added to the custom menu under the item “Food.”
-
Ok.
So what I want to be able to do is to assign the items under ‘food menu’ (a confit item list) a category so that they can be displayed by category on seperate blog pages.
I can get new posts to do this happily but setting the category but when I add an item under ‘food menu’ I don’t see the category option list.
Ie. Posts with set category work as expected. Food menu items do not and only display under the blog page ‘Menus’

In order to display the hierarchy of categories and posts (or pages) constructed in your custom menu, you may display it in a widget, and copy and paste it from the widget into a page as desired.
But perhaps I’m a bit confused. What is the name of your Custom Menu? Is “Food” the name of a custom menu, or is it a category item in a custom menu called “Menus”?
Either way you should be able to add subcategories below the categories which will display as children of the main categories. Posts might then be the third generation. For example MENUS > Food > Pasta > Fettuccine Alfredo. But you’ll need to have an actual post with the subcategory “Fettuccine Alfredo” before it will display in your sidebar drop-down menu.
…but when I add an item under ‘food menu’ I don’t see the category option list…
Posts with set category work as expected. Food menu items do not and only display under the blog page ‘Menus’You won’t see a category in the “category option list” in the custom menu until at least one post is published with that category assigned to it.

Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood what you’re saying, and what you’re trying to accomplish.
-
I meant to say “…you’ll need to have an actual post with the subcategory “Pasta” or “Rice dishes and Mains” before these will display in your sidebar drop-down menu.

Ok.
So im not sure Im explaining it very well or if I dont understand you explanation.
The current setup is:
Custom menu: Test Menu Categories (Currently Primary Menu)
Pages in menu:
1. Home (Static page)
2. Menus (Page)
2.a. Food (Category)
2.b. Drinks (Category)
3. Blog (Page)What I wat is to be able to add an item to food menu (Like the Rigatoni All’arrabbiata currently in there), assign it to Food Category and have it display under 2.b.
Currently I can write a Post and add category Food and it displays in 2.b. BUT I cannot get an item from the Food Menu Item list to appear there.
I have set the Blog page to belong to the Menu Template, which will display all Food Menu items but I am not able to split the Food Menu’s up.
What I need is to be able to:
1. Add item to Food Menu’s
2. Assign it an item Label
3. Assign it a Menu Section
4. Based on Menu section and/or Menu label display under the appropriate category or pageDoes that make sense? I apologise for the number of posts Im creating here and not explaining clearly.
-
Perhaps I’m wrong about that last bit comment because the “Drinks” category appears in the drop-down sidebar menu, even though you apparently don’t have a post with that category yet.
I’ve flagged the thread for Staff attention.

BUT I cannot get an item from the Food Menu Item list to appear there.
If the Food Menu items are posts then you would find them under the Custom Menus posts lists. You can also use the Links options as well. If either of these modules aren’t available on the left side of the Custom Menus page you can add them at Screen Options at the top right of the page. Don’t know if this is any help. I’ve had limited experience with Custom Menus, and have nearly always used them to construct menus of pages, which have no categories or tags.

Ok I have made some progress from the infor mation you have provided in that I used a Link in the custom menus to get the posts from the Food Menu. This does not contain the Price information and is formatted slightly differently.
Do you have any idea why these would be different?
I have no got:
1. Home (Static page)
2. Menus (Page)
2.a. Drinks (Page)
2.b. Food (Page)
2.b.i. Breads … (Link)
etc
etc
3. About (Page)
4. Contact Us (Page)
5. Blog (Blog)Problems:
1. Links have incorrect formatting and no prices
2. Blog all food menu items in correct format but not seperated into seperate menus. Thanks again for help.

crombiejohn,
Good. You’re getting there.
Problems:
1. Links have incorrect formatting and no prices
2. Blog all food menu items in correct format but not separated into separate menus.1. and 2. It’s displaying excerpts of the items at one level. You have to click on the title to see the full post. I don’t know if this is by WordPress design or part of the theme design. Example:
Menus > Foods > Breads and Starters brings us to the page http://midnightbluerestaurant.com/menu/breads-and-starters/,
where the introductionBREADS AND STARTERS
The bread dough is one of those timeless recipes that trace their origins in the mists of time…is almost invisible against the blue background. I don’t know why, but text may be set to be hidden by default on archives pages with this theme.
Following the intro, excerpts of your posts (menu items) appear, beginning with Coquilles St Jacques, but the prices are absent. The reason for this is that these are excerpts displaying, by default. I believe this is a theme dependent issue. Here’s a relevant forum thread which might help, though it’s quite old (2011):
The prices are missing from the archives in those I’ve checked, along with “This entry was posted in . Bookmark the permalink,” links to earlier and later posts (chronologically it appears), and an open comment box.
-
Is the text (BREADS AND STARTERS, etc.) which is virtually invisible on the archive page a post category description? On the posts in this category it appears in a separate box above each item.
-
I will have to check the links you sent when I’m in front of a PC.
Regarding the post category description question that is the title of the ‘Food menu’ section called ‘menu section’so I don’t think so.
-
I meant this
BREADS AND STARTERS
The bread dough is one of those timeless recipes that trace their origins in the mists of time. The preparation of this wonderful mix, the Greeks called it the food of the gods, has its origins in prehistoric times when man realized that he could get a workable dough, by combining the dust of crushed acorns and water. It’s barely visible against the blue background on the post archives page, which is http://midnightbluerestaurant.com/menu/breads-and-starters/, but it can be found in a separate gray bubble at the top of each post in that subcategory.
-
Im not really sure by what you mean by a ‘post category description’.
The posts SHOULD look like this:
http://midnightbluerestaurant.com/blog/But instead they look like this:
http://midnightbluerestaurant.com/menu/food-menu/pasta/The:

I had a look at:
Show full posts instead of excerpt in archives (Sandbox)
While this would possibly work other places, I cannot do this as the posts are auto-magically created by the theme. (I think thats how it works anyway)
-
On a follow up, I was able to add the ‘Menu Section’ to the custom menu i created by adding that option to the ‘Screen Options’.
Unfortunatley it also only links to the blog post archive version of the posts, so I still get the trimmed version of the post that doesnt include the Correct formatting of section posts nor the price.
The workaround Im thinking I might need to use is to add the price of the item to the item description but that is messy and will cause double ups of prices when the posts is read fully.

But instead they look like this:
http://midnightbluerestaurant.com/menu/food-menu/pasta/It appears to be inherent in the design of this theme that the subcategories of the Food or Drink categories, for example, display as post archives, containing excerpts of the posts, not the full posts. So you might very well prefer the way the menu items appear on the static “Blog” page, but that doesn’t mean they “should” look like that.
Im not really sure by what you mean by a ‘post category description’.
At dashboard > Posts > Categories you’ll find an “Add New Category” form on the left side. At the bottom is a big box titled “Description.”
I cannot do this as the posts are auto-magically created by the theme.
That’s a tough one to grasp. I’ve tried out a few dozen WordPress themes and have never come across one yet that creates it’s own posts. You’re telling me that you don’t have to enter content into a post editor, edit, revise and then finally publish each post?
In fact I just added Confit to a test blog of mine. I found no categories, no posts, one page (“About”). The custom menu, titled “Menu 1” contains two items “Home” and “About.” I can’t imagine any form of magic that’s going to create posts out of the thin here.

Hi @crombiejohn – It looks like you chatted with one of our live chat operators today. Can you let me know if you were able to get this resolved?

musicdoc1: Correct, I was not sure if this was intended or not, hence why I have created this thread:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/featurebug-confit-theme-to-display-as-menu-not-blog-post-archive?replies=1At dashboard > Posts > Categories you’ll find an “Add New Category” form on the left side. At the bottom is a big box titled “Description.”
musicdoc1: No, this is generated through the Dashboard -> Food Menu -> Menu Sections tab. They appear to be similar to the category description but my understanding is that Categories are only for posts. If you want to categorize the individual items in a food menu, then you would use Labels, which you’ll find under the Food Menus group on your dashboard. Labels are ment to be managed exactly like Categories so Im not sure on the difference between Food Menu Labels vs Sections

Musicdoc1, this isnt my area of expertise. To create the food item I go to Dashboard -> Food Menu -> Add Item.
Here I fill in a title, description and price into html cells and I Ok the information. Next I go to the blog page and that information is “auto-magically” converted into the post for me. So no, I dont need to go to posts, edit, update, etc but i DO need to enter the information beforehand. I hope that answers your question.Hi @crombiejohn – It looks like you chatted with one of our live chat operators today. Can you let me know if you were able to get this resolved?
jeremeylduvall: Yes and no. We got to the point that we realised that adding the information to the pages IS possible, and that is my update above. I have created a new thread asking if it was an intended design to only show the archive posts when seperating the menus as it is formated the same whay on the Demo theme.
