Adding a category to sidebar

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi my name is dave and before i decided to ask these questions i have spent 2 days trying to do it myself reading watching videos etc, and now i have succumb to asking you guys, hope you can help i have just written a post called The A’s Language of sailing it has appeared on my front page and in my recent post section, firstly i do not want this on my front page but to be put in a category in the side bar called Nautical terms A to Z which i have in the categories [add categories section] how do i get that category in the sidebar, and then for that post to be in that category in the side bar and not show up on the main page the reason i don’t want this to show in the front page is it is to long and i have only just done the A’s.

Appearance>Widgets>add category>edit>add title>Nautical terms A to Z>save changes then i go to the visit site and you will see what i have, i do not know where humor comes from and why there is 2 nautical terms A to Z.

What i am looking for is a Category that says Nautical Terms A to Z and then sub-directories, i.e terms beginning with A, then B etc
and another category that is called Yacht Maintenance with sub headings to that for mechanics, painting, electrics, etc so that i can post stuff in there respective pigeon holes {not a computer term i know)

Never thought i would go bald joining wordpress but i am getting there fast.

Hope i have explained myself weel enough to be understood
Look forward to a replt and an idiots guide to my situation
    Kindest Regards
    Dave

    – “Humor” comes from the post “A little exercise for your facial muscles”.

    – You’ve got two “Nautical terms” because you’ve given the widget the name of that category. The widget title should be “Categories” or whatever; “Nautical terms” should be a category; if you want A, B, etc. showing up in your sidebar, you should assign the posts to such categories as well, and turn those categories into sub-categories.

    – You can’t avoid having the long post in your front page (till you write new ones), unless you set your front to be a static page; see the FAQ on that.

Post editor > Categories module: click “Add New Category”, type name, select a parent from the “Parent category” dropdown, click Add, click Update Post.

(That’s for creating a new subcategory. If the category already exists and you just want to turn it into a subcategory, you go to Posts > Categories, hover under title, click Edit, select parent from the dropdown, click Update Category.)

I have same problem with categories. I cannot figure them out. Sometimes they show up in the sidebar sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they show up in the drop down from the category widget but sometimes they don’t. The process is not well mapped. WordPress is great but I am also about to abandon it because I cannot get it to work in less than 10 hours of frustration.

Categories will only show up in the sidebar after they have been assigned to at least one post and that post has been published.
