Adding a domain
-
Hi everyone, I’ve got a WordPress website on the premium £70 a year version. I already registered/bought the .com and .co.uk domains for the site with a different company. I got the .com version on WordPress for free by the looks of thing (well they sent me a bill saying $0.00 for mapping it). I’m wondering if I can do the same with the .co.uk domain?
Thanks for any help,
John

The $18 upgrade includes both the domain and the mapping for a single domain only.

Thanks for the reply. Which $18 upgrade are you talking about? I only remember paying £70 for a year for what was a premium package. Does this mean there’s no way of getting the .co.uk version onto the internet using WordPress without paying?

Premium packages include an $18 upgrade for purchase of a single domain name and a domain mapping upgrade for one blogs and for one year.

Ah ok fair enough thanks. One last question was, can you set up a payments system under the premium package? I mean can you use free plugins that will enable you to sell and take payments from customers?

No. See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
See here for details in regard to all available upgrades. http://en.support.wordpress.com/upgrades/
See here for the Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
See here for ecommerce details http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/
Note that the free plan and the Premium plan do not allow you to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions unless they have the $299. per year Business upgrade. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ecommerce-is-now-available-on-wordpresscom?replies=1
A self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, conduct ecommerce and edit the database. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Ah yeah I think choosing WordPress.com might have been where I went wrong. I only registered this new site and got the premium package for it today. So I think I can still cancel for free.

Provided you are logged in under the same username account that registered the blog and purchased the upgrades, you ought to be able to request a refund from your dashboard > Store > My Upgrades
WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers.

Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received. That said I’m tagging this thread for Staff because you will not want to lose the domain you purchased. You will want to point the nameservers to the new site you set up.

I cancelled the premium package but I thought I wouldn’t lose the domain anyway since I bought both the domain name and hosting from a separate company? Thanks for looking into it and flagging it for me though.

since I bought both the domain name and hosting from a separate company?
Oh! Thanks for that relevant information.

Hi there,
If your domain is registered with a separate domain registrar (not at WordPress.com), you can cancel WordPress.com Premium including the domain mapping upgrade and it won’t affect your domain registration itself. You won’t be able to continue using the domain here at WordPress.com without a domain upgrade, but you will still own the domain through the other registrar and can continue using it elsewhere.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
