Adding a Facebook icon link to my sidebar instead of publishing direct to FB

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi…I disconnected from publishing on my Facebook page (Edibletcetera) because it doesn’t look impactful enough so I’m reverting to manually copying/pasting images and links into FB – however, I’d like to add a Facebook icon link on my blog sidebar to its FB page but am confused as to how to….can you please help? Thanks so much! JM

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

We have a guide to adding social media icons (like a Facebook icon) to your sidebar here: Add Social Media Buttons to Your Sidebar or Footer

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with that. :)

Hi – I followed your instructions and whereas the link to my FB page now appears on the sidebar, the FB icon doesn’t. I saved the icon to my media library but can’t see how to add that to my sidebar.

Also, I created a ‘follow my blog’ widget on the sidebar but each time an email is added, it goes to a page that says… ‘Your subscription did not succeed, please try again with a valid email address.’ Can you help? Thanks! JM

    Hi there,

I followed your instructions and whereas the link to my FB page now appears on the sidebar, the FB icon doesn’t. I saved the icon to my media library but can’t see how to add that to my sidebar.

I see that you added the Facebook Like Box widget to your sidebar. If you want to add the Facebook icon, you can use a different widget for that. Since you just have the one icon, you might want to try using an Image Widget to put the icon image in your sidebar with a link to your Facebook page.

Also, I created a ‘follow my blog’ widget on the sidebar but each time an email is added, it goes to a page that says… ‘Your subscription did not succeed, please try again with a valid email address.’

Can you let me know what email address you’re trying to add there? (The email address will be redacted from the support forum for your privacy, but staff can still see it.) I’ll be happy to look at the email address and see why you might be getting that error.

I’ve spent a couple of hours trying to add the Facebook icon widget following your instructions to no avail. it just keeps appearing as the words ‘link to edibletcetera’s facebook page’. i have the icon in my library, I went to ‘edit’ as directed and did everything else but it isn’t working.
Re the ‘follow my blog’ field where you enter your email address, so far, emails that I’ve entered to see if its working are all ones I own, as follows:

(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
    edibletcetera.com

Each time it directs me to this message:

Your subscription did not succeed, please try again with a valid email address.

I’d be most grateful if you can help with both these issues as I’ve tried everything I know and followed all the instructions.

    many thanks!

the last one I typed in incorrectly – should read:

(email visible only to moderators and staff)

    Thanks again!

Sorry to be a pain but a new issue has arisen – the draft ‘preview’ option isn’t working – neither on my laptop or I-Pad. It just remains blank and can’t connect at all, or it takes me to my current blog post. Not sure what’s going on but wonder if all this is connected. I’ve reset Firefox but that still doesn’t explain why it doesn’t work via Safari either. :(

Hi there, let’s take a look at each of these issues one at a time. :)

The link that says “Edibletcetera’s Facebook page” is from the Facebook like box widget. That isn’t the widget you’ll want to use if you just want a Facebook icon that links to your Facebook page.

To add an icon that links to your Facebook page, you can use the Image Widget. To use the image widget, you will need to get the URL for your Facebook icon from your media library. Then, add the image widget (not the Facebook like box widget) to your sidebar. Paste the URL for your Facebook icon in the “Image URL” box, and the link to your Facebook page in the “Link URL” box. Please let me know if you have any questions about that.

Each time it directs me to this message:
Your subscription did not succeed, please try again with a valid email address.

I just tried entering the first email address in the list in your Follow Blog widget, and it worked for me. Can you try the other email addresses again, making sure there aren’t any extra spaces or other characters when you type the email address into the box there?

the draft ‘preview’ option isn’t working – neither on my laptop or I-Pad. It just remains blank and can’t connect at all, or it takes me to my current blog post.

Can you check to make sure third party cookies are enabled in your browsers? If you aren’t sure, you can check that and find more information about it here: Preview Problems and Third Party Cookies

If you have third party cookies enabled and you’re still having trouble previewing your drafts, please let me know and we can investigate that further.
