Adding a link (to an article within the site, to a specific place in the sidebar

I want to add a link to the sidebar to information for book publishers who might be interested in my material. It would simply say something like FOR INTERESTED PUBLISHERS, with that activated to link to the information. I’m sorry but I don’t know the first thing about how to go about it. How to get the link heading into the sidebar and place it where I want to. I’ve gone to Appearance and Widgets, but can’t figure out what to do. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello there!

I took a look at your site and it appears as if you were able to add links in your sidebar using the Text widget. I see two. If you’d like to add your link for book publishers, you’d do this in a similar manner.

First, you’d create the page that contains the pertinent information for prospective publishers.

Once you’ve done that, a URL will have been created. In order to grab that URL, you can open your Publisher’s Page in your browser and copy the address from your address bar.

Then, go to Appearance → Widgets. Add a new text widget. Inside that widget, you’ll add your link. You can title it anyway you’d like, and you’ll include your copied URL in that link.

As an example, using a current page you have on your site, a link to your Bibliography page would look like this:

You can use the example above to create your own link!

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

H-m-m… That still doesn’t tell me what I need to know. As you noted, there are two text widgets on my sidebar. But I was working with a computer programmer at the time, and she may have helped with that. I don’t recall. How do I open up a text box in which I can put the information I want? I see nothing to click on that will do that. Then, can the material be moved (i.e. its placement on the sidebar changed), after it has been created?

All right! Let’s get that text widget installed…

First, here is information you’ll need about widgets, and how they are installed:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/

Now that you’ve read the document I linked above, open your site’s Dashboard, which you can access here:
https://wordwisehymns.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Then, click Appearance → Widgets.

In the list of widgets, you’ll see a Text widget. You can click on it and add it to your sidebar. Your text widget will look/operate like this:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/

Once you’ve done that, you can add the link as I instructed in my last note:

As an example, using a current page you have on your site, a link to your Bibliography page would look like this:
You can use the example above to create your own link!

I hope this gives you a clearer idea about how to add widgets to your site, and how to install your link. During your process, if you have questions, drop me a note!

H-m-m… Well, you’re dealing with a very non-techie person here. I went to the page you gave me, and saw a long list of things. Scanned down the list and found Text, which I expected would give me some clear and simple steps to create the widget. But when I clicked on it, it contained next to no information at all. (Must be doing something wrong.)

In my blog, I go to Appearance, and then to Widgets. I scan down the left-hand column to Text and click on that. Up comes a box called Sidebar 1, with “Add Widget.” When I click on that, the word Text appears on the right-hand side. I thought maybe all I had to do was right click, or left click on that, and enter what I intended. But nothing happens when I click on it. It just sits there staring at me. :-)

H-e-l-p!

Hi there! You’re actually doing great! I see that you managed to add that Text widget to your sidebar. Well done.

To add content to that Widget, you now want to click on the little upside-down triangle in the Text widget box. That will open up the widget and allow you to add the link!

Remember to save the widget after you’ve added your content to it!

Let me know how this next step worked out for you! Cheers!

Well, it ain’t perfec, but I got ‘er done. Thanks for your patience. Turns out, on my monitor, the lines around the box where I was to type are so faint that they are invisible. But your last instruction was the key. Have a great day.

Awesome! I took a look, and the link works great! Nice job.

If you want to move it higher up in the sidebar, you can drag it to a new place. Just an FYI!

Best of luck. I hope a lot of publishers click that link :)
